Replacing a knock sensor on a 2004 Honda CRV can be challenging, especially when accessing it from below proves impossible. This guide outlines a successful top-down replacement method, providing valuable insights for those facing a similar repair. After multiple attempts to access the knock sensor from underneath the vehicle failed, a top-down approach was employed. Referring to a workshop schematic and a YouTube video demonstrating starter motor replacement (which requires inlet manifold removal), provided crucial guidance.
The process began by removing the inlet manifold. To achieve sufficient access to the sensor, the throttle body and several hoses (including a coolant hose, which was preemptively plugged with a dowel) were detached. This allowed the manifold to be shifted to the right, exposing the knock sensor.
Initially, the new knock sensor resisted installation. However, inserting the old sensor first, then the new one, solved this issue. The electrical connector was reattached, and all removed components were carefully reinstalled. Upon turning the ignition, the dreaded EMS light remained off, and the engine started without issue.
The successful knock sensor replacement was a significant victory. Remaining tasks included replacing the bulkhead, repairing seized screws on the latch catch, reattaching the bottom splash guard, and removing the vehicle from the ramps. With the knock sensor issue resolved, the car was ready for its upcoming MOT inspection.
A crucial tool for this repair was a pair of long-nosed pliers, invaluable for manipulating hose clips and electrical connectors. Accessing the sensor from above allowed the use of a standard 27mm socket, eliminating the need for an offset spanner (necessary for the bottom-up approach).
