Replacing the Wireless Ignition Node (WIN) module in a 2012 Ram 2500 might seem daunting, but it’s a surprisingly manageable DIY task. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough, saving you a trip to the dealership and potentially hundreds of dollars. This process utilizes AlfaOBD software and a compatible OBD interface.
Obtaining Your 4-Digit PIN Code
Before replacing the WIN module, you’ll need your truck’s 4-digit PIN code. You can obtain this from a dealership or retrieve it yourself using AlfaOBD.
Using AlfaOBD to Retrieve Your PIN:
- Insert a working key into the existing WIN module and turn the ignition to the “Run” position without starting the engine.
- Connect your OBD interface and ensure AlfaOBD is running and connected to the interface.
- In AlfaOBD, navigate to:
Car Model -> Your truck model (Ram 2012 (DJ/DR))
Function -> Radio Frequency Hub (RFH)
Control Unit -> Wireless Control Module (WCM) - MY2011-12 non-PowerNet Var. 1
(Var. 2 follows the same procedure).
- Tap “Connect” to establish communication with the module. The connection status will indicate success or failure.
- Tap the car icon with the hood up located in the lower right corner.
- In the Active Diagnostics screen, select:
Procedure to start -> Read PIN -> Tap Start
- Your 4-digit PIN will be displayed.
Dealer Option: Alternatively, request your PIN from a Ram dealership (this may be free).
Programming the New 2012 Ram 2500 WIN Module
Once you have your PIN, you can proceed with programming the new WIN module. You’ll need a Phillips head and T20 Torx bit to remove the old WIN module and install the new one. I used a Dorman 601-082 WIN module for my truck. It’s a direct fit replacement.
- With the new WIN module installed, insert a working key and turn the ignition to the “Run” position without starting the engine.
- Ensure your OBD interface is connected and AlfaOBD is running and communicating with the interface.
- Navigate to the same WCM module in AlfaOBD as in the PIN retrieval process.
- Connect to the module.
- Tap the car icon with the hood open.
- In the Active Diagnostics screen, select:
Transfer Secret Key from PCM -> Enter 4-digit PIN -> Tap Start
- Allow the programming process to complete. Cycle the key off then back on. A flashing security light (red light near the fuel gauge) will indicate the next step.
Programming Existing and New Keys to the 2012 Ram 2500 WIN Module
Finally, program your existing keys (and any new keys) to work with the new WIN module. Having a spare key on hand is recommended as a backup. I got a couple extra keys online just in case anything went wrong during programming.
-
With a key inserted and the ignition in the “Run” position (engine off), connect to the WCM module in AlfaOBD as before.
-
Tap the car icon with the open hood.
-
In Active Diagnostics, choose:
Program Ignition Keys or Key FOBs -> Enter 4-digit PIN -> Start
-
Let the programming finish. The instrument cluster lights will illuminate upon completion.
-
Cycle the key off and then on to verify functionality. Repeat this process for each key.
Conclusion
By following these steps, you can successfully replace and program a new WIN module in your 2012 Ram 2500. This DIY approach can save significant time and money.
