How to Disable Auto Start Stop on a 2019 Chevy Equinox

There are a few ways to disable the auto start stop feature on a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox. This feature, designed to save fuel, can be frustrating for some drivers. Let’s explore the common methods.

Manual Override Using the Shifter

One way to temporarily disable the auto start stop is by using the manual mode on your Equinox’s shifter. Shift into “M” (Manual mode), then repeatedly press the upshift paddle (+) until you reach the highest gear. This essentially tricks the system, as it typically won’t activate the stop/start in higher gears.

However, this is not a permanent solution. You will need to repeat this process every time you restart the engine or move the shifter out of the manual mode. This method can also lead to premature wear and tear on the upshift paddle.

Aftermarket Bypass Modules: The Smart Stop Start Solution

A more permanent solution involves installing an aftermarket bypass module, such as the Smart Stop Start device. These modules are designed to automatically disable the auto start stop feature upon starting the vehicle.

While these modules offer a convenient fix, they come with some caveats. Installation can be complex, and incorrect procedures may trigger unwanted alarm systems (horn, lights). Additionally, some users have reported needing to manually shut off and restart the engine after using remote start to ensure the start/stop feature remains disabled. The cost for these modules is typically around $140 or more.

The Ideal Solution: A Simple Switch?

Unfortunately, the 2019 Equinox doesn’t come equipped with a dedicated switch to disable auto start stop. While the intention behind the feature—fuel efficiency—is understandable, a user-friendly on/off option would be preferable for many drivers. Even aftermarket solutions currently lack a completely seamless and straightforward way to address this issue. The Smart Stop Start module offers the best solution available currently, but it isn’t without its minor drawbacks.

Considerations for Turbocharged Engines

Traditionally, it’s been recommended to let a turbocharged engine idle for a short period after driving at high speeds, allowing pressures and temperatures to stabilize before shut down. With auto start stop, the engine shuts off immediately during traffic slowdowns or stops, even after highway driving.

While the Equinox has a system to maintain transmission fluid pressure for a quick restart, there isn’t a similar system for the turbocharger’s oil feed. Whether this immediate shutdown negatively impacts these turbocharged engines long-term remains a topic of debate.
