2020 Ford Explorer Brake Service Mode: A Step-by-Step Guide

Entering and exiting brake service mode (also known as brake maintenance mode) on a 2020 Ford Explorer is crucial for specific brake repairs. This mode deactivates the electronic parking brake (EPB) and electric brake boost (EBB) systems, allowing for tasks like manual brake bleeding and rear brake pad replacement. This guide provides a detailed walkthrough of the process without requiring a specialized scan tool.

Activating Brake Service Mode on a 2020 Ford Explorer

Important Notes:

  • Clear all EPB and EBB related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) before starting.
  • This procedure disables the brake boost and requires manual bleeding of the entire brake system.
  • Expect brake warning indicators and messages to appear during service mode.
  • When replacing brake pads, compress the caliper piston without rotating it.

Activation Steps:

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Ensure the EPB is released.
  3. Simultaneously press and hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch in the RELEASE (downward) position.
  4. Cycle the ignition OFF then ON within 5 seconds while maintaining pressure on both the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF again and release both the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch. The yellow EPB indicator will illuminate, and “Maintenance Mode” will display on the message center, confirming successful activation. The brake system is now deactivated.

Deactivating Brake Service Mode on a 2020 Ford Explorer

Important Note: Brake performance will be significantly reduced in service mode. Do not drive the vehicle.

Deactivation Steps:

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON position.
  2. Press and hold down the accelerator pedal.
  3. Pull the EPB switch to the APPLY (upward) position while continuing to hold the accelerator pedal.
  4. Firmly press the brake pedal for at least one second, then release it while still holding the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.
  5. Cycle the ignition OFF and then ON within 5 seconds. Release both the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch. The system will automatically apply and release the parking brake. If the EPB switch isn’t released before this sequence completes, the EPB will remain applied.

Successful deactivation is confirmed when the yellow parking brake and red brake warning indicators turn off, and the “Maintenance Mode” message disappears from the message center. The brake system is now fully functional. Ensure the parking brake is released before moving the vehicle.
