How to Program Your Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Car

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with HomeLink® and Car2U® systems, your garage door opens with the press of a button on your visor or overhead console. These in-car technologies are powered by your vehicle, eliminating the need for batteries and providing a seamless experience. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U.

HomeLink systems are typically identified by a single LED indicator and often feature a house icon on the center button. Car2U systems, on the other hand, have three LED lights, one above each button.

Programming Your HomeLink® System

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming

Begin by clearing any previously programmed garage door openers from your HomeLink system. To do this, press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously. Keep holding until the indicator light on the HomeLink system starts blinking slowly, and then rapidly for about 20 seconds. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.

Note: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices.

Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control

Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door opener. Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote. While keeping the Genie remote button pressed, immediately press and hold the selected HomeLink button at the same time. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.

Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener

The programming process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):

  1. Locate the PROGRAM button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until the round blue LED illuminates. Release the button. The long purple LED will begin to flash.
  2. Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this process one more time – press and hold the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Test the programming by pressing the HomeLink button a few times. Your garage door should now activate.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):

  1. Locate the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED indicator will start blinking.
  2. Press the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 once. The red LED will stop blinking and remain on.
  3. Press the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED should turn off.
  4. Test the programming by pressing the HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now open or close.

Step 1: Reset Car2U to Factory Default Settings

Note: Resetting Car2U will erase all previously programmed garage door openers.

Step 2: Program Car2U to Your Genie Opener

Similar to HomeLink, the programming steps for Car2U vary based on the model of your Genie garage door opener.

For Newer Genie Models (with a Program Button):

  1. Press and hold the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead until the round blue LED turns ON. Release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing.
  2. Press and hold the Car2U button you wish to program for your Genie opener for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this – press and hold the same Car2U button again for two seconds and release. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button several times until your garage door moves.

For Older Genie Models (with a Learn Button):

  1. Press and release the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. The red LED indicator will begin to blink.
  2. Press the desired Car2U button once. The red LED will stop blinking and remain illuminated.
  3. Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED should turn off.
  4. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again to activate your garage door.

Step 3: Changing Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener (Car2U)

If you want to use a Car2U button that is not Button 1 (the default Genie button), follow these steps to change the factory setting:

  1. Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
  2. Press and hold the button you want to reprogram for Genie (either button 2 or 3). While holding it, press and release button 1, and then press and release button 1 again. The LED corresponding to the button you are holding will flash.
  3. Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat Step 2 if you want to program a second Car2U button for another Genie opener.
