Losing or damaging your car remote can be a major inconvenience. Fortunately, programming a new remote for your GMC Acadia can often be done yourself, saving you time and money at the dealership. This guide provides comprehensive, easy-to-follow instructions on how to program your GMC Acadia car remote, also known as a key fob or transmitter, for models around 2023 and similar systems. Whether you have existing recognized remotes or need to start fresh, we’ve got you covered.
Programming Your GMC Acadia Remote with Recognized Transmitters
This method is the simpler and quicker option if you already have two working remotes for your GMC Acadia. Having recognized transmitters allows the system to easily learn the new remote’s signal. Ensure your vehicle is turned off and that you have all remotes – both the currently working ones and the new remote you wish to program – with you before starting.
-
Begin by placing your two currently recognized, functioning remotes into the cupholder of your GMC Acadia. This keeps them in a central location and readily accessible.
-
Locate the key lock cylinder cap on the driver’s side door handle. Carefully remove this cap to expose the key lock cylinder. Take the vehicle key that is part of your new remote and insert it into this door lock cylinder. Turn the key counterclockwise (towards the front of the car) five times in rapid succession, within a 10-second timeframe.

-
After successfully turning the key, check the Driver Information Center (DIC) display in your Acadia. It should display the message “READY FOR REMOTE #2, 3, 4, ETC.” This indicates the vehicle has entered programming mode and is ready to learn a new remote.
-
Now, you’ll need to access the transmitter pocket within your GMC Acadia. This pocket is located under the liner at the bottom of the center console storage area. Lift up the console liner to reveal the transmitter pocket. Place the new remote you are programming into this pocket.

-
With the new remote in the transmitter pocket, press the ENGINE START/STOP button in your GMC Acadia. Once the transmitter is successfully learned by the system, the DIC display will update to indicate it’s ready to program the next remote, if you have more to program.
-
Remove the newly programmed remote from the transmitter pocket. Press either the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the remote to finalize the programming. To program any additional remotes, simply repeat Steps 3 through 5. Once you have programmed all desired remotes, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit the remote programming mode.
-
Finally, ensure you reassemble your new remote by putting the key back into the transmitter fob. Test all programmed remotes to confirm they are working correctly with your GMC Acadia’s locking and unlocking system.
Programming Your GMC Acadia Remote Without Recognized Transmitters
If you do not have two recognized remotes available (perhaps you’ve lost them all or they are not functioning), you will need to use a more extended programming procedure. This method, while slightly longer, still allows you to program new remotes for your GMC Acadia. Note that this particular method might not be available in Canada. This process will take around 30 minutes to complete. As before, ensure the vehicle is off and you have all remotes you wish to program with you.
-
Start by removing the key lock cylinder cap on the driver’s door handle, just as in the previous method. Insert the vehicle key from the remote into the key lock cylinder and turn it counterclockwise five times within 10 seconds.
-
This time, the Driver Information Center (DIC) will display “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.” You must now wait for 10 minutes. After the 10-minute wait, the DIC display will change to “PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN.” Once you see this message, press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC will again show “REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.”
-
Critically, repeat Step 2 two more times. This means you will go through the 10-minute waiting period and press the ENGINE START/STOP button a total of three times. After the third repetition, all previously programmed remotes will be erased from the vehicle’s memory. This is a necessary step to allow programming without recognized transmitters. The DIC display should then show “READY FOR REMOTE # 1.”
-
Now that the system is ready, place the new remote into the transmitter pocket located in the center console, just as described in the previous programming method (under the liner).
-
Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the remote is successfully learned, the DIC will indicate it’s ready for the next remote.
-
Remove the programmed remote from the pocket and press the UNLOCK or LOCK button on the remote. To program any additional remotes, repeat Steps 4 through 6. After programming all your remotes, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
-
Lastly, reassemble your remote by inserting the key back into the fob. Test each of your programmed remotes to ensure they properly lock and unlock your GMC Acadia.
By following these steps, you should be able to successfully program your GMC Acadia car remote and regain full keyless entry functionality. Always double-check your owner’s manual for any specific instructions or variations related to your exact GMC Acadia model year.
