Having the ability to control your garage door directly from your car offers unparalleled convenience and security. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with integrated systems like HomeLink and Car2U, opening your garage door is as simple as pressing a button on your visor or overhead console. These built-in technologies are powered by your car’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries and ensuring they’re always ready when you need them. Genie garage door openers are widely compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U.
Identifying which system you have in your car is straightforward. HomeLink systems typically feature a single LED indicator, often accompanied by a house icon above the center button. Car2U systems, on the other hand, are recognized by three LED lights, one above each button.

This guide provides clear, easy-to-follow instructions on how to program your car’s HomeLink or Car2U system to your Genie garage door opener, ensuring seamless access to your garage.
Programming Your HomeLink® System
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear HomeLink Memory
Start by clearing any previous programming from your HomeLink system. This is done by pressing and holding the first and third buttons simultaneously. Keep holding them down until the indicator light on the HomeLink system begins to blink slowly, and then rapidly. This process usually takes about 20 seconds. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, so you’ll need to reprogram any other garage door openers or devices linked to your HomeLink system.
Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote
Next, you need to teach your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie garage door opener remote.
- Choose the HomeLink button you want to use to control your Genie garage door.
- Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button.
- Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door.
- While still holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the selected HomeLink button in your car.
- Continue holding both buttons until the indicator light on the HomeLink system blinks slowly and then changes to a rapid blink.
- Once the indicator light blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your Genie Opener
Now, you’ll need to synchronize the programmed HomeLink button with your Genie garage door opener unit. The steps vary slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until the round blue LED indicator light turns ON. Then, release the button. The long purple LED will start flashing.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release. Repeat this process by pressing and holding the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and releasing. The long LED on your Genie opener should flash blue and then turn off.
- Press the programmed HomeLink button a few more times to test if your garage door opens. If it doesn’t open on the first try, continue pressing the button until the door responds.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED indicator light will begin to blink.
- Press the desired HomeLink button in your car one time. The red LED on the Genie opener will stop blinking and remain illuminated.
- Press the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again to activate your garage door. Your Genie garage door should now open or close when you press the programmed HomeLink button.

- Press the programmed Car2U button a few times to test if the garage door operates. It might take a few presses for the door to respond.
For Older Genie Models:
- Press and release the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. The red LED will begin to blink.
- Press the desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and stay on.
- Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the Car2U button again to activate your garage door. Your Genie garage door should now respond to the programmed Car2U button.
Step 3: Changing Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener (Optional)
If you want to assign a Genie opener to a button other than button 1 (which is the default), follow these steps:
- Press and hold buttons 1 & 3 on your Car2U system for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
- Press and hold the button you want to change to control your Genie opener (either button 2 or 3). The corresponding LED will start flashing. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1. Then, press and release button 1 again.
- Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now configured for your Genie opener. Repeat Step 2 if you have a second Genie opener to program to another Car2U button.
