Embarking on a career change can be both exciting and daunting, especially when transitioning into a rewarding field like education. Shenandoah University’s Career Switcher Program offers a streamlined pathway for professionals from diverse backgrounds to become licensed teachers in Virginia. If you’re contemplating a fulfilling career in education, this guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to apply to this esteemed program and begin your journey as an educator.
Step 1: Secure Your Spot with the Advanced Tuition Deposit
The first crucial step in your application process is to register and submit a non-refundable $100 registration fee. Due to the program’s popularity and limited class sizes each semester, this deposit is essential to reserve your place in the upcoming Career Switcher cohort. This deposit not only guarantees your spot but also directly contributes to your tuition, with the remaining balance payable upon official registration.
Ready to take the first step? Select the term for which you wish to register and pay your deposit through the secure online portal:
Step 2: Complete and Submit Your Program Application
The next vital step is to formally apply to the Career Switcher Program. Download and complete the comprehensive application form to provide Shenandoah University with the necessary details about your background and aspirations.
Career Switcher Program Application Form
Once you have meticulously filled out the application, mail it to the following address:
Shenandoah University
Extended and Distance Education
1460 University Drive
Winchester, VA 22601
Initially, to secure your place, submitting just the application form and the advanced tuition deposit is sufficient. Shenandoah University understands that gathering all required documents takes time and encourages you to mail additional materials as you acquire them.
Step 3: Prepare For and Schedule Your PRAXIS Subject Assessment
A critical component of the admission process is the PRAXIS Subject Assessment. It is imperative to prepare for and schedule this exam as early as possible. Passing the PRAXIS Subject Assessment in your intended teaching subject is a prerequisite for joining the Career Switcher Program. Scheduling and receiving your scores can take time, so proactive planning is key.
This assessment evaluates your content knowledge in the subject area you wish to teach. To identify the appropriate PRAXIS Subject Assessment test codes recognized by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), consult the official list:

Note that only one passing PRAXIS Subject Assessment score is needed for program entry, and candidates with multiple endorsements are welcomed.

Allow approximately four weeks to receive your official test results, which should be forwarded to the Office of Extended and Distance Education at Shenandoah University via email.
Step 4: Submit Remaining Required Documents
As you gather them, promptly submit the remaining necessary documents to the Office of Extended and Distance Education. These documents, in addition to your deposit and application, include:
- Official, sealed transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities.
- Official PRAXIS Subject Assessment test scores.
- A current resume outlining your professional experience.
Approximately six weeks before the upcoming Fall or Spring session commences, the program coordinator will email you an update on your application status. The Office of Extended and Distance Education will formally notify you via email once you are fully qualified for the Career Switcher program.
Ensure all application materials and your final tuition payment are submitted to the Office of Extended and Distance Education roughly three (3) weeks before the program’s start date. Specific deadlines are provided to students in the registration materials.
