Become a Virginia Teacher: The Career Switcher Program for Professionals

Are you a professional with a bachelor’s degree seeking a fulfilling career change? Virginia faces a growing demand for qualified teachers, and the Virginia Teacher Career Switcher Program offers a practical and accelerated pathway to enter the teaching profession. For individuals with established careers, transitioning into education might seem daunting, but programs like EducateVA are specifically designed to make this career switch accessible and manageable.

What is the EducateVA Career Switcher Program?

The EducateVA Career Switcher program is a Virginia Department of Education certified initiative tailored for individuals holding a bachelor’s degree or higher and possessing at least three years of full-time work experience. Recognizing the challenges faced by career professionals, EducateVA provides an affordable and flexible route to becoming a licensed teacher in Virginia without disrupting your current employment.

Since 2004, EducateVA has successfully prepared over 2,000 teachers through its innovative approach. This program operates under the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Career Switcher Program framework, adhering to the same rigorous standards set by the Virginia Department of Education for all approved teacher education programs. However, EducateVA distinguishes itself by offering this high-quality instruction at a significantly lower cost and with maximum flexibility. The program’s online coursework and Saturday meeting schedule are specifically designed to accommodate the busy schedules of working professionals.

Program Structure and Virginia Teaching License

The EducateVA program is structured in two levels to guide you through the process of becoming a fully licensed teacher in Virginia. Level I lays the foundational coursework, completed over one 18-week semester. This level incorporates seven online modules combined with seven mandatory Saturday sessions, ensuring a blend of flexible online learning and valuable in-person interaction. A crucial component of Level I is a 40-hour field placement in a classroom setting within a local Virginia school, providing practical, real-world experience.

Upon securing a teaching position, you’ll advance to Level II. During your first year of teaching, you will be granted a One-Year Provisional (Career Switcher) License. Throughout this initial year, EducateVA faculty will provide ongoing support and mentorship as you work towards obtaining a 10-year renewable Virginia teaching license. Successful completion of EducateVA Level II requirements, coupled with a successful first year of teaching, makes you eligible for recommendation by your school division for this renewable license, marking the culmination of your career transition journey.

Teacher Endorsements and PRAXIS Exams

In the context of teacher licensure, an endorsement refers to the specific subject area you are qualified to teach, which will be officially recognized on your Virginia teaching license. Your chosen endorsement area dictates the content you will be teaching in the classroom.

To gain endorsement, you are required to pass the PRAXIS Subject Assessment, also known as the PRAXIS II exam, in your chosen content area. Preparing for this exam is crucial, and resources are readily available. Study guides can be obtained from booksellers, and ETS offers a free online PRAXIS Study Companion tailored to your specific content area, which is an invaluable resource.

EducateVA supports a wide range of endorsement areas, catering to diverse interests and expertise:
