Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – simply press a button in your car, and you’re in. Vehicles often come equipped with systems like HomeLink or Car2U, featuring buttons typically located on the visor or ceiling. These systems operate on your car’s power, eliminating the need for batteries, unlike traditional handheld remotes. Good news for Genie users: Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U.
Cars with HomeLink usually have a single LED indicator and often display a house icon on the central button. Car2U systems are identifiable by three LED lights positioned above each button.
Programming Your HomeLink System to Your Genie Garage Door Opener
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming
Begin by clearing any previously programmed settings from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously for approximately 20 seconds. The indicator light will initially blink slowly, then transition to a rapid blink. Once you see the fast blinking, release both buttons.
Note: This step will erase all previously programmed garage door openers from your HomeLink system.
Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control
Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door opener. Position your Genie remote control close to the chosen HomeLink button, ideally about two inches away. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button. Keep both buttons pressed until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a fast blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener
The programming process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until a round blue LED illuminates. Release the button. A long purple LED will then start to flash.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, then release. Repeat this – press and hold the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release. The long LED on the opener unit should flash blue and then turn off.
- Press the programmed HomeLink button several more times until your garage door begins to move.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED will start blinking.
- Press the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 one time. The red LED on the opener unit should stop blinking and remain on.
- Press the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED should turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again. Your Genie garage door should now activate.
