Clarion County Career Center Practical Nursing Program to Close

The Clarion County Career Center (CCCC) Practical Nursing Program, a long-standing educational opportunity in the region, is set to shut down. This announcement was made by Hugh Henry, president of the Clarion Area School Board and a member of the CCCC Joint Operating Board, at a recent school board meeting. The closure marks a significant change for vocational training in Clarion County and raises questions about the future of nursing education in the area.

According to Henry’s report, the decision to discontinue the Practical Nursing Program is due to ongoing changes within the Clarion County Career Center. While the program itself is ceasing operations, there is a silver lining. Henry mentioned that there are parties interested in leasing the facility previously used by the nursing program. This presents a potential opportunity for the space to continue serving the community through similar educational or vocational services, although the specifics of these future programs are currently undefined. “It’s unfortunate, but that’s where it is at,” Henry stated, acknowledging the program’s end while also pointing to possible future uses for the facility that could benefit the community.

The Clarion County Career Center Practical Nursing Program was a vital pathway for individuals seeking to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). The program was fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), a nationally recognized accreditation body for nursing programs. Furthermore, it held provisional approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing, ensuring graduates were eligible to sit for the state board exams required to become practicing LPNs. This accreditation and approval underscored the program’s commitment to quality education and its alignment with industry standards for practical nursing.

Beyond the nursing program announcement, the Clarion Area School Board meeting addressed several personnel matters. These included resignations, new appointments across various roles such as paraprofessionals and coaching staff, and volunteer positions. The board also approved contracts for van driving services and reviewed requests for professional development conferences for school staff, covering topics from childhood apraxia of speech to pest management and safe school summits. Additionally, the board accepted the resignation of their solicitor and discussed ongoing educational services at the Clarion Psychiatric Center. The formation of a Comprehensive Plan Committee was also approved, drawing members from administration, faculty, parents, community, and local businesses to guide future planning initiatives for the school district.

While the closure of the Clarion County Career Center Practical Nursing Program represents a loss for local vocational training in nursing, the potential leasing of the facility offers a glimmer of hope for future educational opportunities in the Clarion area. The community now awaits further details on the potential lessees and the programs they may bring to this location, which has historically served as a hub for practical nursing education.
