Welcome from the Residency Program Director
The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine/St. Vincent’s Medical Center is deeply committed to developing highly skilled physicians who are dedicated to lifelong learning and delivering compassionate patient care. St. Vincent’s Medical Center has consistently been recognized both regionally and nationally for the compassion of our staff, our unwavering commitment to patient satisfaction, and the high quality of care we provide. Choosing the right Internal Medicine residency program is a crucial step in your medical career, and we believe our program at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center offers an exceptional environment for growth.
Our hospital boasts an active medical staff of over 500 physicians, representing a comprehensive spectrum of more than 50 specialty and subspecialty medical and surgical disciplines. This extensive network allows our residents to gain a broad and vital range of clinical experiences. Our residents receive comprehensive exposure to internal medicine across both inpatient and outpatient settings. This includes rotations through our inpatient units, our state-of-the-art intensive care unit, our community-focused outpatient Family Health Center, diverse subspecialty community practices, and busy urgent care centers. The breadth of clinical settings ensures a well-rounded training experience within the St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center program.
Since joining Hartford HealthCare in October 2019, in addition to our long-standing sponsorship by the School of Medicine, our campus has experienced rapid growth and development. Our strong relationship with both the School of Medicine and Hartford HealthCare promises to continually elevate the level of education and training we provide to our residents and students, ensuring they are well-prepared for the evolving landscape of healthcare.
Our educational philosophy emphasizes that while case-based learning is invaluable, exposure to diverse cases alone is insufficient. Experience must be coupled with dedicated teaching and appropriate supervision to truly constitute education. Our faculty are deeply committed to working closely with our residents, fully integrating them into all facets of patient care. We offer a variety of learning sessions specifically designed to impart the fundamentals of medicine, including Grand Rounds, intern and resident reports, and noon conferences. Beyond medical management, we also prioritize teaching residents about crucial aspects of the broader healthcare system, such as continuous quality improvement and fostering a high-reliability culture of 200% accountability, ensuring we and our colleagues consistently perform at our best. Residents also receive specialized training in essential areas such as teaching skills, medical ethics, and end-of-life care. Our commitment to care extends beyond our local community, and we actively participate in medical mission trips to locations such as the Caribbean and Vietnam, broadening our residents’ perspectives on global health.
Our department offers two distinct residency programs tailored to different career goals. The categorical program is designed to equip residents with the comprehensive skills needed to confidently enter the practice of medicine or to pursue further training in a subspecialty of Internal Medicine. The preliminary program provides interns with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Internal Medicine while offering ample elective opportunities across a wide array of fields, effectively preparing them for advanced training in their chosen specialties.
Just as we serve a diverse community, our residency program benefits from a diverse group of residents. We are privileged to attract talented residents from around the globe. One of our program’s greatest strengths is the collegial, inclusive, and supportive environment in which our residents learn and grow together. We believe our program aligns with the aspirations of those seeking a rigorous yet supportive residency experience. If you have any questions about the St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center program, please do not hesitate to contact us.
We eagerly look forward to the possibility of meeting you and welcoming you to our program.

Welcome from the Designated Institutional Official
The St. Vincent’s Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency boasts a long and distinguished tradition of medical education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our program, which began in 1958, has a proud history of producing countless physicians who have achieved remarkable success in their careers. We encourage you to explore the program accomplishments highlighted on our website.
In March 2019, marking a significant milestone after 61 years of sponsoring residents under SVMC, our program transitioned to university sponsorship by Quinnipiac University’s Frank H. Netter MD School of Medicine (NSOM). This sponsorship signifies that NSOM now assumes educational responsibility for the SVMC IM Program and represents it to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the national body overseeing Graduate Medical Education (GME). As the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), I am privileged to oversee all Netter-sponsored residency programs. We have a dedicated Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) that convenes quarterly to oversee these sponsored programs, including peer-selected residents from across all our residency programs, ensuring resident voices are heard and considered. Currently, NSOM sponsors the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Internal Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology Programs, as well as Waterbury Hospital’s General Surgery Residency, where I also serve as Program Director and Chairman of Surgery.
Affiliation with a nationally recognized university and school of medicine brings numerous significant advantages to our program and, most importantly, to our residents. We encourage you to take the opportunity to visit the QU campus, particularly the Medical School campus, to fully appreciate the resources available to our residents. The School of Medicine features a state-of-the-art simulation center that is truly impressive. Our library resources are extensive and readily accessible to all our trainees, supporting research and learning. We provide statistical support for resident research projects and offer access to a “wet lab” to facilitate basic science research endeavors. Furthermore, being an integral part of a major university grants access to faculty expertise from diverse schools within Quinnipiac, including Nursing, Law, Business, and Engineering, enriching the interdisciplinary learning environment. Residents also have access to university sports and entertainment events across QU’s three campuses, fostering a well-rounded residency experience. Netter SOM medical students spend a significant portion of their clinical rotation time at SVMC and Waterbury Hospital, becoming integral members of the educational and scholarly community within our sponsored training programs.
In summary, all of us at the Netter SOM are proud and delighted to be a part of your medical training journey within the St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center program. Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions or wish to discuss the program further.
