Volvo Trucks North America has announced the immediate discontinuation of the 16-liter Volvo D16 engine in North America. This powerful engine was previously available in the Volvo VNL and VNX models. While the D16 is no longer in production, Volvo remains committed to supporting existing customers with continued aftermarket service and support for their D16 engines.
Why the Volvo D16 Engine Was Discontinued
The decision to discontinue the Engine Volvo D16 stems from two primary factors: limited market demand and the substantial long-term investment required to adapt the D16 to the specific operating conditions of the North American market. Volvo Trucks has observed a growing trend among highway customers favoring the lighter and more fuel-efficient Volvo D13 engine, which holds the largest market share in North America.
Volvo VNL and VNX Model Updates
The Volvo VNL model will continue to be offered with the Volvo D11, Volvo D13, and Cummins X15 engines. To address the needs of customers who require the capabilities of the VNX, Volvo is developing an X-package for the VNL model. This package will combine the ride height and heavy-haul features of the VNX with the option of either the Volvo D13 or Cummins X15 engine. Key features of the X-package include a 20,000-pound front axle, dual steering gears, a heavy-duty bumper, a chrome grille, increased ride height for better ground clearance, and 500 horsepower variants of both the Volvo D13 and Cummins X15 engines.
Transmission Options
The Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission (AMT) comes standard with the D11 and D13 engines, while manual transmissions are available as an option. For the Cummins X15 engine, customers can choose between a manual transmission or the Eaton Ultrashift transmission.
Volvo’s decision to discontinue the engine Volvo D16 reflects the evolving demands of the North American trucking industry, with a clear shift towards fuel efficiency and lighter engine options. The company’s commitment to providing alternative solutions, like the VNL X-package, ensures customers still have access to heavy-haul capabilities without compromising on performance or efficiency.
