The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, part of the Aurora Health Care network, is dedicated to fostering the next generation of outstanding cardiologists. Located in the heart of Chicago, this fellowship program provides a robust educational framework, extensive patient exposure, and personalized mentorship, all crucial for developing exceptional expertise in cardiovascular medicine. Success in our program is built upon two fundamental pillars: individualized attention for each fellow and a wealth of diverse clinical experiences.

Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, a 517-bed acute care teaching hospital, offers a unique blend of a large teaching institution’s clinical diversity with the personalized atmosphere of a community hospital. Its prime location on Chicago’s North Side, coupled with a well-established referral network, draws patients from across the tri-state region and beyond. This ensures fellows are exposed to a broad spectrum of cardiovascular conditions and patient demographics, enriching their training and preparing them for diverse practice settings.

As an ACGME-accredited program, the Aurora Health Care Program Cardiology Fellowship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center is committed to providing all necessary resources, innovative educational tools, and best practices to cultivate well-rounded cardiologists. Our curriculum is meticulously designed to ensure fellows achieve mastery in all six core competencies defined by the ACGME Program Requirements for Graduate Medical Education in Cardiovascular Disease.

Our comprehensive three-year, ACGME-accredited program offers intensive training across all subspecialties within cardiology. Nine fellows are selected each year to benefit from the program’s key strengths, which include:

  • Dedicated Teaching Faculty: Our core faculty is comprised of highly committed teaching attendings who are experts in their respective fields and proficient in the most advanced cardiovascular techniques. They are passionate about education and invested in the success of each fellow.

  • Favorable Faculty-to-Fellow Ratio: A high ‘Teacher-to-Fellow’ ratio ensures consistent one-on-one instruction and close mentorship. This personalized approach allows for tailored learning experiences and ample opportunities for in-depth discussions and skill development.

  • Diverse Patient Population: The program benefits significantly from the diverse socio-economic and ethnic demographics of our patient population. This rich diversity provides fellows with unparalleled exposure to the full spectrum of cardiovascular disorders, from common to rare, and across varied patient presentations and risk factors.

  • Customizable Training: Recognizing the unique interests and aptitudes of each fellow, our program offers the flexibility to tailor aspects of the training experience. This allows fellows to delve deeper into areas of particular interest and develop specialized skills that align with their career goals.

  • Cutting-Edge Technology and Techniques: Our cardiology section is committed to staying at the forefront of innovation. Fellows gain hands-on experience with the latest technologies, including transcatheter ablation, atherectomy, balloon valvuloplasty, coronary stenting, multi-plane transesophageal echocardiography, stress echocardiography, and intravascular ultrasound. This ensures graduates are proficient in contemporary cardiovascular interventions and diagnostics.

  • Electrophysiology Fellowship Collaboration: The presence of an on-site Electrophysiology Fellowship Program provides a synergistic learning environment. Close collaboration between the two programs enhances the electrophysiology training of our cardiology fellows, offering unique insights and expanded learning opportunities in this specialized area.

  • Strong Internal Medicine Residency Program: Our program is complemented by a highly competitive Internal Medicine Residency Program within the institution. This robust internal medicine foundation further strengthens the educational environment and fosters a culture of academic excellence.

Graduates of the Aurora Health Care Program Cardiology Fellowship at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center are highly sought after and have a proven track record of success. Many pursue further specialized training in prestigious sub-subspecialties such as Electrophysiology, Heart Failure, and Interventional Cardiology at leading institutions including Bay State and Northwestern University, among other competitive programs nationwide.
