“Almost everyone will make a good first impression, but only a few will make a good lasting impression.” – John Hare, EY Director of Cyber Security
Choosing the right workplace is a significant decision, often likened to finding the right fit in personal relationships. The journey to discovering the ideal career path can involve exploring various options until you find the organization that truly resonates with your aspirations. For many, that perfect match might emerge unexpectedly, making their initial choice a lasting and fulfilling one. This was certainly the case for me when I stumbled upon the Career Compass Program at EY.
As a fresh-faced first-year university student navigating the overwhelming experience of Orientation Week, I meticulously planned my schedule for February 23rd, 2017. Amidst a sea of O-Week talks, I prioritized attending the “A Journey from UNSW to EY” session, eager to secure a front-row seat. To my surprise, my enthusiasm wasn’t widely shared, leaving me alone in the front, rows ahead of the next attendee. However, any initial awkwardness quickly dissipated thanks to the engaging Asmaa Zahid. Asmaa’s presentation made me feel more confident and assured in my chosen direction. I particularly remember Asmaa’s vibrant personality and her longing for the beachside home she missed – Asmaa, if you happen to read this, I hope you’re finding time to reconnect with the sand and waves! It was Asmaa who first introduced me to the EY Game Changers Club, the initial step on my path.
The EY Game Changers Club further solidified my interest, thanks to Linda Nguyen, who organized three incredibly insightful sessions. Linda’s approach was perfectly balanced, providing just enough information to spark a genuine interest in learning more about EY, without overshadowing the comprehensive Career Compass Program that awaited. Linda, I hope motherhood isn’t proving too chaotic – it will all be worthwhile soon!
My growing curiosity about the company that shared my initials led me to the second, more significant stepping stone: the Career Compass Program (CCP). This intensive two-day program, held on September 27th and 28th, is designed for a select group of 47 pre-penultimate university students. It offers an immersive introduction to EY’s culture, valuable networking opportunities with EY professionals across various service lines, and a platform to share future career aspirations. It was during the Career Compass Program that I met the unforgettable Frances Agius. Here’s a detailed look into the enriching experience of those two days.
