Are you contemplating a career change and passionate about education? Shenandoah University’s Career Switcher Program offers a streamlined pathway for professionals like you to transition into the rewarding field of teaching. This program is specifically designed for individuals holding a bachelor’s degree who are eager to make a difference by inspiring the next generation. If you’re ready to switch careers and step into the classroom, here’s your step-by-step guide to applying for Shenandoah University’s acclaimed Career Switcher Program.
Step 1: Secure Your Spot with Advanced Tuition Deposit/Registration
Spaces in the Career Switcher Program are limited each semester to ensure personalized attention and a high-quality learning experience. To reserve your place in the upcoming class, an essential first step is to submit a non-refundable $100 registration fee along with your Career Switcher application. This deposit not only guarantees your position but also contributes to your overall tuition, with the remaining balance payable at the time of registration.

Step 2: Complete and Submit Your Application
The next crucial step is to formally apply to the Career Switcher Program. Please download and carefully complete the Career Switcher Program Application Form. Once completed, mail your application to the following address:
Shenandoah University
Extended and Distance Education
1460 University Drive
Winchester, VA 22601
To initiate your application and reserve your spot, submitting the application form and the advanced tuition deposit are the only immediate requirements. Shenandoah University understands that gathering all necessary documents takes time, and encourages you to send in additional required materials as you acquire them.
Step 3: Prepare For and Schedule Your PRAXIS Subject Assessment
A fundamental requirement for joining the Career Switcher Program is demonstrating your subject matter expertise through the PRAXIS Subject Assessment. It is vital to prepare for and schedule this exam as early as possible in the application process, as scheduling and receiving results can take time.
The PRAXIS Subject Assessment should align with the subject area(s) you intend to teach, ensuring you possess the necessary knowledge to excel in your chosen field. For a comprehensive list of PRAXIS Subject Assessment test codes recognized by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), please refer to the PRAXIS SUBJECT ASSESSMENT TEST CODES. Note that only one passing PRAXIS Subject Assessment score is needed for program entry, and candidates with multiple endorsements are welcomed.
For general details about the Praxis Subject Assessment Exams, visit the ETS’ WEBSITE. For specific preparation resources, ETS offers a dedicated PRAXIS Subject Assessment Test Preparation section on their website. Most PRAXIS exams are administered at central locations on Saturdays, so careful planning is essential to meet deadlines and avoid late registration fees. Check the ETS website for the most up-to-date PRAXIS SUBJECT ASSESSMENT TEST DATES AND LOCATIONS. After taking the exam, allow approximately four weeks for score processing and ensure your results are forwarded to the Office of Extended and Distance Education at Shenandoah University via email.
Step 4: Submit Remaining Required Documents
As you gather the necessary paperwork, please submit the remaining documents to the Office of Extended and Distance Education. These documents, in addition to your deposit and application, include:
- Official, sealed transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended.
- Official test scores.
- A current resume outlining your professional experience.
Approximately six weeks before the scheduled start date of the Fall or Spring session, the program coordinator will contact you via email to update you on your application status. The Office of Extended and Distance Education will officially notify you by email once you have fully met the qualifications for the Career Switcher Program. It’s important to ensure all application materials and your final tuition payment are submitted to the Office of Extended and Distance Education roughly three (3) weeks prior to the program’s commencement. Specific deadlines will be provided in your registration materials.
