Chevy Traverse Transmission Fluid Change: A DIY Guide

Changing your Chevy Traverse’s transmission fluid is crucial for maintaining its performance and longevity. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of a partial fluid change, perfect for DIYers. While a complete flush requires specialized equipment, this method helps refresh the fluid and remove potential contaminants.

A partial transmission fluid change on a Chevy Traverse involves draining the fluid accessible through the drain plug and replacing it with fresh Dexron VI. Remember, this doesn’t replace all the fluid as some remains in the torque converter, cooler lines, and other components. This process, however, significantly improves fluid condition, especially for vehicles experiencing stop-and-go driving.

Before starting, gather your materials: Dexron VI transmission fluid (approximately 5 quarts), a 7/16″ socket or wrench, a drain pan, a long-neck funnel, plastic sheeting or cardboard, and a marker. Always consult your owner’s manual for specific fluid requirements and capacities.

Locate the transmission drain plug, usually on the underside of the transmission pan. Position your drain pan beneath it. Using the 7/16″ socket or wrench, carefully loosen and remove the drain plug, allowing the old fluid to drain completely.

Inspect the drain plug for any damage or excessive wear. The presence of metal shavings or debris in the drained fluid could indicate more serious transmission problems and warrant professional inspection. Clean the drain plug and reinstall it, ensuring it’s snug but not over-tightened. It’s helpful to mark the plug’s position before removal to ensure proper reinstallation.

Locate the transmission dipstick, usually found in the engine compartment. Using the funnel, carefully pour in the new Dexron VI transmission fluid. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct amount of fluid to add after a drain and fill. Typically, it’s around 5 quarts for a Chevy Traverse.

With the engine running and the transmission in park, recheck the fluid level using the dipstick. Add more fluid if necessary to reach the “full” mark on the dipstick. Dispose of the old transmission fluid properly at a designated recycling center.

After driving for a few hundred miles, it’s recommended to repeat this process to further exchange the old fluid. This ensures a higher percentage of new fluid within the transmission system. Remember to consult your owner’s manual for the recommended transmission fluid change intervals for your specific Chevy Traverse model year. Regular maintenance helps prolong the life of your transmission and ensures smooth operation.
