Your Role as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) / CNA

As a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or CNA at ChristianaCare, you will play a vital role in supporting our patients’ daily needs and ensuring their comfort and well-being. Working under the direction of Registered Nurses, you will be integral to delivering exceptional patient care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Direct Patient Care: Assisting patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and mobilization.
  • Vital Sign Monitoring: Performing and accurately recording vital signs and Accu-checks, crucial for patient assessment and care planning.
  • Safety and Crisis Response: Responding effectively to patient crisis situations within your scope of responsibility and promptly notifying the Registered Nurse.
  • Point of Care Testing: Performing finger sticks and defined procedures using point-of-care instrumentation, adhering to strict laboratory safety standards.
  • Patient Observation: Providing 1:1 observation for patients requiring close monitoring due to psychiatric crisis or safety risks, as directed by physician orders and nursing assessments.
  • Communication and Responsiveness: Communicating with patients, colleagues, and physicians with courtesy and empathy, addressing patient needs with promptness and care.
  • Continuous Learning: Participating in required in-service education to enhance your skills and knowledge, ensuring you remain at the forefront of patient care practices.
  • Safety Advocacy: Adhering to departmental safety rules and reporting any unsafe conditions to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

ChristianaCare is looking for individuals who are high school graduates or equivalent, with prior patient care experience, including vital signs measurement. Successful completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program or clinical hours as a nursing student is highly valued. Acute care experience is preferred. Current BLS Certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or other approved providers is mandatory.
