Discover the ChristianaCare Summer VolunTeen Program: A Stepping Stone for Future Healthcare Heroes

ChristianaCare has once again opened doors for young, aspiring healthcare professionals through its enriching Summer VolunTeen Program. This nine-week initiative, held from June 17 to August 16, 2024, provided an invaluable platform for students aged 14 to 18 to immerse themselves in a hospital environment, contribute to their community, and develop essential skills for their future careers.

Kayla Brigandi, a student from Strath Haven High School, enthusiastically shared her experience, stating, “It’s a great experience, especially because I’m interested in going into the medical field.” The program offered her firsthand insight into “what it’s actually like in a hospital and a setting that I’ve never really been exposed to before,” providing a real-world perspective crucial for her career aspirations.

This year, the ChristianaCare Summer VolunTeen Program welcomed 89 bright and enthusiastic VolunTeens. These young individuals played a significant role in providing both patient and administrative support across ChristianaCare’s hospitals. Working alongside healthcare professionals, they gained practical experience and a deeper understanding of the diverse facets of hospital operations.

Sayuri Karnick, a student from MOT Charter School, emphasized the program’s impact on her career path. “Seeing all the different health care workers, different departments and just getting experience to know this is what I want to do and where I want to work” were the highlights of her summer, solidifying her interest in healthcare.

Margarita Rodriguez-Duffy, director of Volunteer Services, highlighted the mutual benefits of the program. “This program is a fantastic way for teens to get involved and make a real difference in our community,” she said. She further noted, “They bring so much energy and fresh ideas, and in return, they pick up professional skills and important experiences that can impact their academic and career decisions.” The ChristianaCare Summer VolunTeen Program is designed to be a launchpad for young individuals, fostering both personal and professional growth.

Aashish Prashanth, a Wilmington Charter student, discovered the rewarding aspects of patient interaction. While enjoying the “lab experience,” he found “my favorite part is interacting with the patients themselves.” He elaborated on the enriching conversations, “Talking about their lives and giving them something to do during their time in the hospital is enjoyable for both of us. And they give good advice,” showcasing the human connection fostered within the program.

Rodriguez-Duffy emphasized the program’s focus on commitment and practical learning, stating participants are “expected to be committed and practical, focusing on learning and growth throughout their summer.” She further added, “They gain experience, make new connections, and contribute to a team that values their enthusiasm and dedication, truly emphasizing ChristianaCare’s commitment to love and excellence.”

Mack Rubano, also from Wilmington Charter, valued the social diversity of the program. “It’s really fun to meet a whole different range of people all the time,” he shared, highlighting the program’s ability to broaden horizons and foster interpersonal skills.

Rose Wessells, manager of Volunteer Services, beautifully summarized the transformative impact of the program. “My favorite part of the Summer VolunTeen Program is to watch the magical transformation of the teens from when they enter our doors in June to when they depart in August,” she expressed. Witnessing their growth, she added, “At times, it has brought tears to my eyes to see the emotional and social growth in these young students as a direct result of our program.”

For teenagers eager to make a meaningful impact and embark on a journey of personal and professional development, the ChristianaCare VolunTeen program is an exceptional opportunity.
