In less than a year after its launch, the DD15 engine platform accumulated an impressive one billion miles of real-world use, demonstrating its reliability and efficiency. Innovative Technologies Driving Efficiency

The Gen 5 DD15 incorporates several key technological advancements. A redesigned aftertreatment system, featuring advanced thermo-management control, is 60 pounds lighter than its predecessor, thanks in part to the use of a single, high-efficiency diesel particulate filter (DPF) with asymmetric cell technology. This technology allows for effective particulate trapping while maintaining optimal flow.

ThermoCoasting: Maintaining Optimal Temperatures

Detroit’s innovative ThermoCoasting feature utilizes engine brakes strategically to maintain optimal aftertreatment temperatures during regeneration. Engaging the engine brakes between 900 and 1,500 rpm, while simulating coasting and maintaining zero torque at the flywheel, keeps the system at its ideal operating temperature, further enhancing efficiency. Noise levels during ThermoCoasting are minimal, comparable to the low engine brake setting.

Enhanced Thermal Management and Component Redesign

The DD15 Gen 5 benefits from significant thermal management upgrades, including optimized cooling circuitry and improved temperature distribution across the cylinder head. About 50% of the engine’s components are new or redesigned. A key improvement is the incorporation of a proprietary asymmetric ball bearing turbocharger, which minimizes internal friction, enabling peak power and torque at lower engine speeds.

Power and Torque Optimized for Performance

Peak horsepower for the Detroit Dd15 Hp is now achieved at 1,500 rpm, compared to 1,625 rpm in the previous generation. Peak torque is reached at 900 rpm, down from 1,075 rpm. These improvements result in enhanced performance and fuel efficiency. A redesigned piston bowl and modified inlet ports, combined with a 21:1 compression ratio, contribute to a 3% improvement in fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

Detroit DD15 Engine Specifications and Availability

The 14.8-liter DD15 High Power engine delivers a maximum output of 505 hp (377 kW) at 1,625 rpm and 1,850 lb-ft (2,508 Nm) of torque at 975 rpm. With a gross combination weight (GCW) rating of 80,000 lb (36,300 kg), the engine is compatible with various DT12 transmission options. Available since January 2021, the DD15 engine is an option for Freightliner Cascadia and Western Star 49X trucks.
