But let’s get real for a second and ask the important question: Do You Even Care About Pa Program enough to put in the work to get accepted? Because let’s be clear, getting into PA school is competitive, and it’s getting more competitive every year. But don’t let that scare you off! Instead, think of this as your motivation. As someone who’s been through the application process and now works in the field, I’m here to tell you that with the right approach, you can absolutely make yourself a competitive applicant.
Whether you’re an undergraduate just starting to consider your options or you’ve decided later in your academic journey that PA is the path for you, now is the time to take strategic steps. Think of this as building your foundation. You have the opportunity to shape your application and demonstrate to admissions committees that you’re not just interested in PA school, but genuinely committed and prepared.
When I applied to PA school back in 2011, it felt like navigating uncharted territory. Resources were scarce, and the whole process felt overwhelming. Applying Early: Your First Strategic Move
If you’re serious about getting into PA school – and remember, we’re asking, do you even care about PA program? – then my number one piece of advice is to apply early. I cannot stress this enough. The sooner you submit your application once it’s ready, the better your chances. Now, “early” doesn’t mean rushing and submitting an incomplete or subpar application before you meet all the prerequisites. It means being prepared and submitting as soon as you’ve decided this is your application cycle and your application is polished.
Many PA programs utilize rolling admissions. This means they start reviewing applications as soon as they are complete, not after the deadline. They don’t wait to gather all 2,000+ applications before starting the review process. Instead, they assess applications as they come in, perhaps reviewing batches weekly. If your application is strong, you could be invited for an interview sooner. If your interview goes well, you could receive an acceptance offer earlier in the cycle. This early bird approach can give you a significant advantage. Even if you are an exceptionally qualified candidate, waiting too long to apply could mean that available spots are filling up, potentially diminishing your chances.
So, what exactly is considered “early”? Aim to submit your application in May or June. While planning, recognize that gathering all required materials for CASPA (Central Application Service for Physician Assistants), including letters of recommendation and transcripts, can sometimes take longer than anticipated. By aiming for May or June, you’ll ideally have your application submitted by June or July, which is considered very early in the application cycle. Applying in August or September isn’t necessarily too late, but applying earlier significantly boosts your odds.
GPA: Demonstrating Academic Prowess
Next to applying early, your GPA is a critical factor in your PA school application. Think of your GPA as a reflection of your academic dedication and ability to handle rigorous coursework – something that directly relates to how much you care about PA program and your future success. As an undergraduate, you’re in an advantageous position, particularly if you have semesters remaining to strengthen your academic record. Focus on maintaining excellent grades and actively working to improve your GPA.
Most PA programs have minimum GPA requirements, specifically for Overall GPA and Science GPA. These minimums typically range from 2.75 to 3.2. While some programs state they have no minimum GPA, it’s important to understand that they are still looking for competitive GPAs. Based on observations from mock interviews and admissions data, a GPA of 3.0 or slightly above is often considered a benchmark. Exceeding this 3.0 threshold significantly increases your chances of securing an interview, leveling the playing field in the competitive applicant pool.
It’s crucial to remember that it’s significantly easier to lower your GPA than to raise it. In fact, in many cases, you can’t “raise” it after graduation – you can only maintain or lower it with further coursework. Minimum GPA requirements are non-negotiable. If a program has a stated minimum and your GPA falls below it, your application will likely be automatically screened out before the admissions committee even sees it. Don’t waste your time and application fees applying to programs where you don’t meet the basic GPA requirements.
The Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) has research indicating that GPA is a strong predictor of student performance in PA school. This is why programs place such emphasis on it. While it’s tempting to rush to gain hours of experience, shadowing, and volunteering, never let your grades suffer in the process. It’s far wiser to take a gap year or slow down your timeline rather than compromise your GPA. A lower GPA can be challenging to overcome later.

Healthcare and Patient Care Experience: Getting Hands-On
When I applied to PA school, the distinction between healthcare experience and patient care experience wasn’t as emphasized as it is today. Programs simply looked for “healthcare experience.” I had gained some experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) during a summer, but my hours were relatively low. Now, PA programs range from having no hour requirements to requiring anywhere from 500 to 2,000 hours. And importantly, there’s a clear differentiation between healthcare experience and patient care experience.
Healthcare experience refers to working in a medical setting but in a role that doesn’t involve direct patient interaction or hands-on care. Examples include roles like transporter, receptionist in a clinic, or a medical assistant primarily focused on administrative tasks. Medical scribes often fall into a gray area, with some programs classifying it as healthcare experience and others as patient care. Essentially, healthcare experience is any medical setting job where you aren’t directly involved in the physical care of patients.
Patient care experience, on the other hand, is when you are directly involved in patient care, physically interacting with patients and contributing to their treatment. This includes roles like CNA, medical assistant (performing clinical duties), EMT, paramedic, patient care technician, phlebotomist, etc. Job titles can sometimes be misleading, so the crucial factor is your actual responsibilities and duties. Many aspiring PAs email asking if their job title qualifies as healthcare or patient care experience. To determine this accurately, you need to analyze your job description and the tasks you perform daily. If you are physically interacting with patients, taking vitals, assisting with mobility, or drawing blood, it likely falls under patient care experience.
Volunteering and Shadowing: Demonstrating Commitment and Understanding
Volunteering and shadowing are additional areas where you need to dedicate time and effort. These experiences, along with coursework and patient care hours, may have specific completion requirements depending on the PA program. Some programs allow these experiences to be in progress at the time of application, while others require them to be completed by the application deadline. It’s crucial to research the specific requirements of each program you are applying to ensure you “check all the boxes”.
Shadowing is often listed as “recommended” or “preferred” by PA programs. However, in my opinion, “recommended” truly means “required.” If a program recommends shadowing, you should make every effort to fulfill that recommendation. Shadowing is vital to demonstrate that you possess a solid understanding of the PA profession and have invested time in observing what the role actually entails.
My general recommendation for shadowing is 100 hours across at least three different specialties or healthcare settings. Aim for a total of 100 hours, but prioritize diverse experiences. While programs often like to see shadowing in primary care, explore other specialties as well, such as dermatology, orthopedics, emergency medicine, or gynecology. Seek out diverse settings like outpatient clinics, inpatient hospitals, and surgical environments. This variety will give you a comprehensive perspective on the PA profession, enriching your personal statement, interview responses, and overall understanding of the role.
Volunteering demonstrates your commitment to your community and to serving underserved populations. Programs look for sustained commitment over time, not just sporadic events. Occasional volunteering at a soup kitchen or through a sorority event is valuable, but having a consistent, ongoing volunteer commitment is more impactful. For example, during college, my involvement with the Wesley Foundation, a campus ministry, included a weekly commitment to a big sister program with a girl from an underserved community. Choose volunteer activities you are genuinely passionate about, and they don’t necessarily need to be medically related. My college volunteer work wasn’t medical; it was focused on mentoring freshmen and students in the community—activities I was truly interested in. Find something you care about and dedicate yourself to it. It shows you genuinely care about PA program and the values it represents.
GRE: Expanding Your Options
The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) – should you take it? That’s a common question. My answer is generally yes, depending on the programs you are targeting. If a program doesn’t require the GRE, your score won’t matter to them. However, taking the GRE significantly broadens your options and the number of programs you can apply to.
Consider the University of Georgia (UGA) and the University of Tennessee (UT) as examples. UGA doesn’t require the GRE, so their applicant pool of 2,000 might consist of individuals who haven’t taken the GRE. UT, on the other hand, does require the GRE. Their applicant pool of 1,000 will likely consist of individuals who have taken the GRE. Now, those 1,000 GRE test-takers can still apply to UGA, effectively creating a larger and potentially more competitive applicant pool for programs with fewer requirements. Conversely, programs with more specific requirements, like the GRE, might have a slightly less competitive applicant pool. By taking the GRE and achieving a reasonably competitive score (even if it’s not exceptionally high, as the GRE isn’t the most heavily weighted factor), you enhance your chances and open doors to more programs.
While some programs state preferred GRE scores, aim for a minimum combined score of 300 (Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning) and ideally above the 50th percentile in each section. The Analytical Writing section is generally less emphasized. Meeting these general targets will make you competitive for programs that require the GRE and increase your overall application strength.
Personal Statement: Your Story, Your Interview Ticket
After fulfilling all the prerequisite requirements, the personal statement becomes your most powerful tool to secure an interview. I often say, “Your personal statement gets you the interview; the interview gets you accepted.” Allocate ample time to craft a compelling personal statement. I advise starting the brainstorming process as early as January before your application cycle opens in April. Even earlier, if you’re an undergraduate or still have a few years before applying, start a running note. Use your phone or a document to jot down ideas as they come to you. If something impactful happens at work or during your experiences, note it down – it might become valuable content for your statement later, even if you don’t use everything.

When you begin writing, just start writing. Don’t get bogged down trying to craft the perfect introduction immediately. Your essay doesn’t need a dramatic, sensational opening. Admissions committees want to hear your authentic story – why have you chosen the PA path? Every element of your essay should connect back to this central question and illustrate your journey to this decision.
Once you have a draft, focus on editing and refining. Eliminate all grammatical errors and ensure a smooth, logical flow. Seek feedback from people who know you well and also from professionals or mentors who understand the PA school application process. A polished and compelling personal statement is paramount.
Remember the character limit: 5,000 characters including spaces, which translates to roughly a page and a paragraph, single-spaced. Space is limited, so you’ll need to be concise in your statement. You might elaborate on certain aspects in supplemental essays if required, but keep your personal statement focused and impactful. Make every word count to show how much you care about PA program and why you are the right fit.
By focusing on these key areas – applying early, excelling academically, gaining relevant experience, demonstrating commitment, and crafting a powerful personal statement – you’ll build a strong application that shows admissions committees you’re not just interested in PA school, but truly dedicated to becoming a Physician Assistant. So, going back to the initial question: do you even care about PA program? Your application is your answer. Make it a resounding “YES!”
