DTC P0299 Mercedes-Benz: Turbo Underboost Code Explained and Fixed

A P0299 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in a Mercedes-Benz indicates a turbocharger underboost condition. This means the turbo isn’t providing the expected boost pressure to the engine. While this might sound intimidating, the solution isn’t always a costly turbo replacement. This article details my experience troubleshooting and resolving a P0299 code on my Mercedes Sprinter van equipped with the OM651 engine.

The primary symptom was the van entering “limp home mode” (LHM) at speeds above 40 mph, particularly when going uphill. In LHM, engine RPM was severely limited, essentially making the turbo useless. Initial diagnostics with an OBD2 scanner confirmed the P0299 code.

A visual inspection of all accessible turbocharger and intercooler pipes revealed no splits or leaks. Replacing gaskets on a large red pipe connecting the intercooler to the turbo also proved fruitless. A trusted mechanic thoroughly checked the system, but like myself, suspected a faulty turbocharger, a costly repair.

Unconvinced about the turbocharger needing replacement, I consulted a Mercedes Sprinter specialist. Peter from MerxWerx, a mobile Sprinter repair service, quickly diagnosed a vacuum leak upstream of the turbocharger, near the EGR valve and cooler. He suspected a faulty turbo transducer but needed a specialized vacuum testing kit to pinpoint the exact culprit.

Upon returning with the vacuum tester, Peter confirmed his initial diagnosis: a faulty turbo transducer. He replaced the transducer with a new one (part number A 009 153 31 28). After the repair, the van performed flawlessly, with no further instances of limp home mode. The engine ran smoothly and regained its lost power.

The P0299 code, while indicative of a turbo underboost condition, doesn’t always necessitate a turbo replacement. A thorough diagnostic process, including vacuum testing, is crucial to identify the root cause. In my case, a relatively inexpensive turbo transducer replacement solved the problem. MerxWerx’s expertise saved me from a significantly more expensive and unnecessary turbocharger replacement. Their mobile service was convenient and efficient.
