Using a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft’s harmonic balancer retaining bolt, rotate the crankshaft until the adjuster is positioned at the bottom, near the inspection hole.
Adjusting the Eaton Clutch
With the adjuster accessible, have an assistant fully depress the clutch pedal and hold it down. This disengages the clutch, enabling adjuster rotation. Using a 5/8″ box end wrench, engage the adjuster’s hex head and push in the locking collar. To increase free travel, pull the wrench towards the driver’s side (clockwise rotation). Adjust in 1/4 turn increments, checking the free travel after each adjustment until you achieve 1 1/2″ to 2″ of free travel. Ensure the locking collar pops back out to secure the adjustment. You might need to slightly rotate the adjuster back and forth until it locks.
Lubricating the Throwout Bearing
While accessing the clutch adjuster, it’s crucial to lubricate the throwout bearing. Locate the grease fitting, which might be directly on the bearing or connected via a hose to the inspection cover. Using a good quality #2 grease, apply approximately 10 pumps. Proper throwout bearing lubrication is vital for its longevity and smooth operation. Once lubricated, replace the inspection cover.
Importance of Proper Free Travel
Maintaining correct free travel is essential for clutch health. Never operate with a “tight” clutch (no free travel). Insufficient free travel leads to clutch slippage and premature wear, ultimately causing self-destruction.
