EPS Volvo: Installing an Electric Power Steering Pump in a Mustang

This guide details the installation of a Volvo electric power steering pump (EPS) in an 88 Mustang GT. This specific application uses a Volvo EPS, but the general principles can apply to other EPS systems. Remember, this is just one approach, and safety precautions should always be taken when working on your vehicle. Always disconnect the battery before starting any electrical work.

Choosing Your EPS Volvo Pump

The 03-08 Volvo S60 EPS pump is a popular choice for this conversion due to its availability and relatively compact size. You can often find these pumps at salvage yards. When sourcing a pump, ensure you also grab both wiring harnesses: the main power harness with two large-gauge wires and the control harness with three smaller-gauge wires.

Necessary Components for EPS Volvo Conversion

Beyond the Eps Volvo pump itself, several other parts are required:

  • Power Steering Rack: A rebuilt 03/04 Cobra power steering rack is recommended. SN95 racks are generally considered superior to Fox body racks.
  • Steering Shaft: A hybrid steering shaft, like the one from Maximum Motorsports, simplifies installation. While re-clocking the rack is possible, the hybrid shaft offers a more straightforward solution.
  • Power Steering Fittings: Maximum Motorsports power steering rack fittings (part number ST-73) ensure proper connection to the SN95 rack. Common misconception is that these ports are metric, they are not.
  • AN Fittings and Hose: You’ll need a 14mm (or 16mm, depending on the Volvo pump) to -6 AN fitting for the pressure side of the pump, 90-degree -6 AN hose ends for the rack connections, and high-pressure power steering hose (Earl’s is a good option). Be sure to measure carefully for your specific application to determine the necessary length.
  • Electrical Components: A fuse holder with a 40-amp MAX fuse is crucial for protecting the EPS system. You will need power steering fluid, preferably the type specified for your specific EPS Volvo Pump
  • Fabrication Materials: Steel stock (3/16″ thick and 1″ wide) is needed for creating custom mounting brackets.

Mounting the EPS Volvo Pump

Custom fabricated brackets are required to secure the EPS Volvo pump. The front bracket mounts to the bumper using existing bolt holes. The rear bracket requires more intricate fabrication, utilizing three pieces of steel stock to create a secure mounting point. Test fit multiple times to ensure proper fitment and clearance before final welding.

Wiring the EPS Volvo Pump

The wiring for the EPS Volvo pump involves three connections:

  • Constant Power: Connect the red wire on the pump’s power harness to a switched power source with a 40-amp MAX fuse. This can be taken from the starter solenoid.
  • Ground: Connect the black wire on the power harness to a solid chassis ground.
  • Remote Switching Wire: Connect the single wire on the control harness (located at the corner of the pump) to a switched accessory wire that activates only when the engine is running, not during cranking. This prevents excessive load during startup. Using an output from an aftermarket engine management system offers more precise control.

Finalizing the EPS Volvo Installation

After mounting and wiring the EPS Volvo pump, connect the power steering hoses using the AN fittings and hose ends. Ensure proper routing and secure any loose wiring or hoses. Reinstall the front bumper cover and double-check all connections before testing the system. Remember to bleed the power steering system after filling with the correct fluid. This process varies depending on the EPS pump used, so consult the appropriate resources for guidance.
