Decoding Ford Transit Keys: Troubleshooting Key Programming After BCM Replacement

A 2019 Ford Transit van presented a unique key programming challenge after a Body Control Module (BCM) replacement due to brake light issues. Initial attempts by a transmission shop and locksmith to program keys using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) were unsuccessful. This article outlines the diagnostic process and explores potential solutions for programming Ford Transit Keys after a BCM replacement.

One of the first steps was to verify the BCM programming using IDS. Initial readings indicated a lack of data in the BCM. Following the IDS data writing procedure resulted in repeated failures at clock 57, displaying an “Error in PID based CCF downloads. Software download failed” message.

Despite multiple attempts and successful data population in the BCM (as confirmed by screenshots), the instrument cluster continued to display a “no key detected” message. Further investigation revealed that this particular Ford Transit model likely doesn’t utilize a transponder-based immobilizer system, as evidenced by the absence of a reader coil in the ignition switch. An error message indicating an incorrect VIN in the Body Control Module (BdyCM) was also observed, despite the module displaying the correct VIN.

Repeating the programming procedure, including swapping the original and new BCMs, yielded the same “no key detected” result. However, the incorrect VIN error was not present during the second attempt. Clarification from the transmission shop confirmed they had not coded the BCM but only attempted key programming.

A full system scan using an Autel diagnostic tool was planned but not completed. A new replacement BCM will be procured to allow for a fresh start to the programming process. Given the van’s operational state prior to the BCM replacement, the focus remains on resolving potential BCM programming issues.

Several factors could contribute to this key programming issue. One possibility is a compatibility issue between the replacement BCM and the vehicle’s other modules. It’s crucial to ensure the replacement BCM is the correct part number and intended for this specific Ford Transit model year. Network communication errors or faulty wiring within the CAN bus system could also hinder successful programming. Furthermore, using the latest IDS software version and ensuring a stable power supply during programming are critical for success. While a transponder key system doesn’t seem to be present, verifying the presence and functionality of other immobilizer-related components is recommended.
