Integrating your car’s built-in remote system with your Genie garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – with HomeLink or Car2U, you can control your garage door directly from your vehicle. These systems, commonly found with three buttons typically located on your car’s visor or ceiling, operate on your car’s power, eliminating the need for batteries. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems often feature a single LED indicator and a house icon on the center button, while Car2U systems are identifiable by three LED lights above each button.

Programming Your HomeLink System for Genie Garage Doors
For detailed instructions in PDF format, please refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming
To begin, clear any previously programmed settings from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the outer buttons (usually button 1 and button 3) simultaneously for approximately 20 seconds. The HomeLink indicator light will initially blink slowly and then rapidly to confirm the system has been cleared. Release both buttons.
NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices.
Step 2: Teach HomeLink Using Your Genie Remote
Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door. Position your Genie hand-held remote close to the chosen HomeLink button, approximately two inches away. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote and, at the same time, press and hold your selected HomeLink button. Keep both buttons pressed until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Step 3: Synchronize HomeLink with Your Genie Garage Door Opener
The subsequent steps depend on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener motor unit (powerhead). Press and hold this button until the round blue LED illuminates, then release. The long purple LED will start to flash.
- Press and hold your programmed HomeLink button for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press and release sequence one more time. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again a few times to test if your garage door activates.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED indicator will begin to blink.
- Press and release your programmed HomeLink button once. The red LED will stop blinking and remain illuminated.
- Press and release your programmed HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the HomeLink button again to check if the garage door opens.
