How to Adjust Eaton Clutch

Adjusting an Eaton Fuller clutch correctly is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to adjust the clutch internally, focusing on 14″ or 15 1/2″ pull-type clutches. Never adjust the external linkage to compensate for wear. Internal adjustment ensures proper clutch engagement and disengagement, preventing premature wear and tear.

Internal Clutch Adjustment Procedure

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools: a 5/8″ box end wrench, a socket and breaker bar, and a good quality #2 grease. Ensure the vehicle is safely parked and secured.

Accessing the Adjuster

  1. Locate the Inspection Cover: Find the inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing (flywheel housing). This cover provides access to the clutch adjuster.
  2. Remove the Inspection Cover: Remove the bolts securing the inspection cover and carefully set it aside.

Adjusting the Clutch

  1. Locate the Adjuster: Look inside the bell housing to find the adjuster on the pressure plate.

  2. Position the Adjuster: Rotate the crankshaft using a socket and breaker bar on the harmonic balancer bolt until the adjuster is at the bottom near the inspection hole.

  3. Depress the Clutch Pedal: Have an assistant fully depress the clutch pedal and hold it down. This disengages the clutch, allowing you to turn the adjuster.

  4. Adjust Free Travel: Using a 5/8″ box end wrench, push in the locking collar on the adjuster hex head. Pull the wrench towards the driver’s side (clockwise rotation) to increase free travel. Adjust in 1/4 turn increments.

  5. Verify Free Travel: Check the clutch pedal free travel. Aim for 1 1/2″ to 2″ of free play. Repeat the adjustment process until the correct free travel is achieved.

  6. Lock the Adjuster: Ensure the locking collar has popped back out, securing the adjuster. You might need to slightly rotate the adjuster to engage the lock.

Lubricate the Throwout Bearing

While you have access to the bell housing, it’s crucial to lubricate the throwout bearing.

  1. Locate the Grease Fitting: Some throwout bearings have a grease fitting directly on them, while others have a hose connected to a fitting on the inspection cover.
  2. Grease the Bearing: Using a grease gun, apply approximately 10 pumps of #2 grease to the fitting. Proper lubrication prevents premature throwout bearing failure.

Final Steps

  1. Replace the Inspection Cover: Reinstall the inspection cover and secure it with the bolts.
  2. Test the Clutch: Start the vehicle and test the clutch operation, ensuring smooth engagement and disengagement.

Importance of Proper Adjustment

A properly adjusted Eaton clutch ensures smooth shifting, prevents slippage, and extends the life of the clutch components. Never operate the vehicle with a “tight” clutch (no free travel), as this will lead to rapid wear and damage. Regular inspection and adjustment, as needed, are essential for maintaining optimal clutch performance.
