How to Program Your Car Remote to a Genie Garage Door Opener

Do you want to open your garage door without fumbling for a separate remote? Many modern vehicles come equipped with integrated garage door opener systems like HomeLink and Car2U. These convenient features allow you to program buttons directly in your car to control your Genie garage door opener. No more bulky remotes cluttering your visor or console! Both HomeLink and Car2U are designed to work seamlessly with Genie openers, offering a streamlined and battery-free solution powered directly by your car’s electrical system. HomeLink systems typically feature a single LED indicator and often include a house icon on the central button, while Car2U systems are identifiable by three LEDs positioned above each button.

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. You can also find a helpful video demonstration here.

Step 1: Clearing Existing HomeLink Programming

Before programming a new garage door opener, it’s a good practice to clear any previous settings from your HomeLink system. This ensures a clean slate for programming your Genie opener.

To clear HomeLink:

  1. Press and hold down both the first and third buttons on your HomeLink system simultaneously.
  2. Continue holding the buttons for approximately 20 seconds. Watch for the indicator light on the HomeLink system. It will initially blink slowly and then begin to blink rapidly.
  3. Once the indicator light is blinking rapidly, release both buttons.

Important Note: Clearing the HomeLink system will erase all previously programmed garage door openers and other devices. You will need to reprogram all desired devices after this step.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control

This step involves teaching your HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your existing Genie garage door remote.

  1. Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door opener.
  2. Take your Genie garage door remote and position it close to the HomeLink button you’ve chosen, generally within two inches.
  3. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door.
  4. Simultaneously press and hold the selected HomeLink button. Keep both buttons pressed.
  5. Observe the indicator light on the HomeLink system. It will blink slowly at first and then change to a rapid blink.
  6. Once the indicator light blinks rapidly, release both buttons.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener Receiver

The final step involves synchronizing your HomeLink system with the receiver unit in your Genie garage door opener. The procedure varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):

Newer Genie openers are equipped with a “Program” button, usually located on the powerhead unit of the opener in your garage.

  1. Locate the “PROGRAM” button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead.
  2. Press and hold the “PROGRAM” button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Then, release the button. A long purple LED will begin to flash, indicating the opener is in programming mode.
  3. Return to your car and press the chosen HomeLink button for two seconds and then release.
  4. Press the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release. Observe the long LED on the garage door opener; it should flash blue and then turn off, signaling successful programming.
  5. To confirm programming, press the HomeLink button a few more times until your Genie garage door begins to move.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):

Older Genie openers typically have a “Learn Code” button instead of a “Program” button.

  1. Locate the “Learn Code” button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead.
  2. Press and release the “Learn Code” button. A red LED light will start to blink, indicating the system is ready to learn.
  3. Within 30 seconds, press the desired HomeLink button once. The red LED on the garage door opener will stop blinking and remain on solid.
  4. Press the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will turn off.
  5. Press the HomeLink button again to test. Your Genie garage door should now activate.
