Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system offers unparalleled convenience. Technologies like HomeLink and Car2U allow you to control your garage door directly from your vehicle, eliminating the need for separate remotes. These systems, typically found with three buttons located on your car’s visor or ceiling console, are powered by your car’s electrical system, meaning no batteries to replace. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems are identifiable by a single LED indicator and often feature a house icon above the center button. Car2U systems have three LED lights, one above each button.
Programming Your HomeLink® System
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to HomeLink Programming Guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming
To begin, clear any previous programming from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the outer two HomeLink buttons (usually the first and third) simultaneously. Keep holding them until the indicator light blinks slowly at first and then rapidly. This process typically takes about 20 seconds. Once the indicator blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, so you will need to reprogram any other garage door openers or devices after this process.
Step 2: Train HomeLink with Your Genie Remote Control
Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door opener. Position your Genie remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button in your car. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While still holding the Genie remote button, press and hold the selected HomeLink button in your car. Continue to hold both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.
Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your Genie Garage Door Opener
The programming process differs slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a Program Button:
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Once it’s lit, release the PROGRAM button. A long purple LED will then start to flash.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, then release. Repeat this process by pressing and holding the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and releasing. The long LED on the opener will flash blue and then turn off.
- Test the programming by pressing the HomeLink button a few times. Your Genie garage door should now activate. If it doesn’t respond on the first try, continue pressing the HomeLink button intermittently until the door moves.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a Learn Button:
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED light will begin to blink.
- Press and release the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 one time. The red LED on the opener will stop blinking and remain on.
- Press and release the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Test the programming by pressing the HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now open or close.
NOTE: For more detailed instructions or troubleshooting, consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual, visit HomeLink’s official website, or the Genie Company website.
Programming Your Car2U® System
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to Car2U Programming Guide.
Step 1: Reset Car2U to Factory Default Settings
The Car2U system comes with default settings that assign each button to a specific brand of opener:
- Button 1: Genie® openers
- Button 2: LiftMaster® openers
- Button 3: Wayne Dalton® openers

To reset the Car2U system and clear any prior programming, press and hold buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously for 20 seconds. Continue holding until all three LED lights above the buttons begin to flash. Once they flash, release both buttons. The Car2U system is now reset to its factory default settings.
NOTE: Resetting Car2U will erase all previously programmed garage door openers and other devices.
Step 2: Program Car2U to Your Genie Opener
Similar to HomeLink, the programming steps for Car2U depend on the model of your Genie garage door opener.
For Newer Genie Models with a Program Button:
- Press and hold the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead until the round blue LED light turns ON. Release the button. A long purple LED will start flashing.
- Press and hold the Car2U button you wish to program for your Genie opener for two seconds and then release. Repeat this, pressing and holding the same Car2U button again for two seconds and releasing. The long LED on the opener will flash blue and then turn off.
- Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button a few times. Your Genie garage door should now operate. If it doesn’t activate immediately, continue pressing the button until the door moves.
For Older Genie Models with a Learn Button:
- Press and release the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. The red LED light will begin to blink.
- Press the desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and stay illuminated.
- Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again. Your garage door should now respond.
Step 3: Changing the Factory Default Button for a Genie Opener (Car2U)
If you want to use a Car2U button other than button 1 for your Genie opener, follow these steps to change the default setting:
- Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 together for ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
- Press and hold the button you wish to reassign to Genie (button 2 or 3). The corresponding LED will begin to flash. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1, then press and release button 1 again.
- Release the button you are holding from step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat Step 2 if you need to program a second Car2U button for another Genie opener.
