Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system, whether it’s HomeLink or Car2U, offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – just a press of a button in your car, and you’re in. Both HomeLink and Car2U are popular in-car technologies designed for this seamless integration. These systems are usually found as three buttons located on your car’s visor or overhead console. The great thing about these systems is they run off your car’s power, so you’ll never need to worry about battery replacements, unlike traditional handheld remotes.
Genie garage door openers are designed to be compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. Identifying which system you have is straightforward. HomeLink-equipped cars typically have a single LED indicator, often accompanied by a house icon above the center button. Car2U systems, on the other hand, feature three LED lights, one above each button.

Programming Your HomeLink® System for Genie Openers
For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.
Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming
To start fresh, you’ll need to clear any previous programming from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously. Keep holding them until the indicator light on the HomeLink system starts blinking slowly and then quickly. This process usually takes about 20 seconds. Once you see the rapid blinking, release both buttons.
Important Note: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed devices, including any other garage door openers.
Step 2: Teach HomeLink Your Genie Remote Signal
Decide which of the HomeLink buttons you want to use for your Genie garage door opener. Take your handheld Genie remote and position it close to the chosen HomeLink button, about two inches away. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While still holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the HomeLink button you selected. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, you can release both buttons.
Step 3: Synchronize HomeLink with Your Genie Opener
The next steps vary slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.
For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button):
- Locate the PROGRAM button on your Genie garage door opener’s motor unit (powerhead). Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Once it’s lit, release the PROGRAM button. A long purple LED will then begin to flash.
- Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press and release sequence one more time. After the second press, the long LED on the opener will flash blue and then turn off.
- Test the connection by pressing the programmed HomeLink button a few times. Your garage door should now activate.
For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button):
- Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED light will start to blink.
- Immediately press the HomeLink button you programmed just once. The red LED on the opener will stop blinking and remain on.
- Press the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will now turn off.
- To confirm successful programming, press the HomeLink button again. Your garage door should now operate.

Step 1: Reset Car2U System to Factory Defaults
The Car2U system comes with pre-set defaults: Button 1 is typically set for Genie® openers, Button 2 for LiftMaster®, and Button 3 for Wayne Dalton®. If you’re programming for Genie on button 1, you might skip the reset unless you’ve reprogrammed it before. To reset to defaults:
- Button 1 = Genie® Manufactured Openers
- Button 2 = LiftMaster® Manufactured Openers
- Button 3 = Wayne Dalton® Manufactured Openers

The programming steps are slightly different depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie model.

- Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button a few times. Your garage door should now respond.
For Older Genie Models (with a Learn Button):
- Locate the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead and press and release it. The red LED will begin to blink.
- Press the desired Car2U button once. The red LED will stop blinking and stay lit.
- Press the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
- Press the Car2U button again to test. Your garage door should now activate.
Step 3: Changing Factory Default Button Assignment for a Genie Opener
If you want to use button 2 or 3 for your Genie opener instead of the default button 1:
- Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 together for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up in solid red.
- Now, press and hold the button you want to assign to Genie (button 2 or 3). The LED above that button will start flashing. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1. Then, press and release button 1 again.
- Release the button you’ve been holding in step 2 and wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now set for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you want to program another button for a second Genie opener.
