Is your Honda keyless entry remote not working, or did you get a replacement remote that needs programming? You can program your Honda keyless entry remote yourself at home, saving time and money. This guide provides a step-by-step process to program your Honda remote quickly and efficiently. Ensure you have all remotes you wish to program for your vehicle present, as all remotes must be programmed in a single session. Also, make sure all doors and the rear hatch or trunk are completely closed before starting the programming sequence. You will only use one remote to initiate the programming mode, but all remotes need to be programmed during this session. It’s important to complete each step within 5 seconds of the previous one for successful programming.
-
Get Ready Inside Your Honda.
Begin by sitting in the driver’s seat of your Honda with all doors and the trunk or hatch firmly closed. Having everything properly closed ensures the system is ready to receive the programming signals.
-
Turn the Ignition to the “ON” Position and Press “Lock”.
Insert your key into the ignition. Turn the key to the “ON” position, which is typically marked as “II” on your ignition bezel. At this point, the dashboard lights should illuminate. Within 5 seconds of turning the key to “ON,” press and hold the “Lock” button on one of your remotes for approximately one second, then release it.
-
Turn the Ignition to the “OFF” Position.
Next, turn the ignition key to the “OFF” position. This position is usually marked as “I” on the ignition bezel, and turning to this position will switch off the dashboard lights.
-
Repeat the “ON/OFF” and “Lock” Press Sequence Three More Times.
You need to repeat steps 2 and 3 a total of three more times, making it four times in total. Each cycle of turning the key to “ON,” pressing the “Lock” button, and turning back to “OFF” must be completed within 5 seconds of the preceding step to maintain the programming sequence timing.
-
Enter Programming Mode.
On the fourth repetition of turning the key to the “ON” position, immediately press the “Lock” button on one of your remotes. If you’ve followed the timing correctly, the vehicle’s door locks will cycle, making a distinct “clunk” sound. It’s important to note that the doors will not actually lock or unlock at this stage; they will just make a noise indicating that the system has entered programming mode. Once you hear this, do not turn the key off. The system is now ready to learn the remote codes.
-
Program Each Remote.
Within 5 seconds of entering programming mode, and then within 5 seconds of programming each subsequent remote, you must program all of your remotes. Press the “Lock” button on EACH remote you wish to program for about a second and release. Each time you press a remote button, the door locks should cycle again, confirming that the remote’s signal has been recognized and programmed. You can program up to three remotes in this session. This entire step, programming all remotes, needs to be completed within 10 seconds.
-
Exit Programming Mode and Test.
Once you have programmed all desired remotes, turn the ignition key completely to the “OFF” position and remove the key from the ignition. Open the car door and step out, then close the door. Now, test each of your programmed remotes to ensure they are working correctly. Try locking and unlocking the doors, and if your remote has a trunk or hatch release button, remember to hold it for a few seconds as it typically requires a longer press to activate.
