How to Program Two Cars with Genie Garage Door Openers

Integrating your car’s remote system with your Genie garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. HomeLink and Car2U are the leading in-car technologies that allow you to control your garage door without needing a separate remote. These systems, typically found with three buttons on your car’s visor or ceiling, operate directly from your vehicle’s power, eliminating battery hassles. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems often feature a single LED indicator and a house icon on the center button, while Car2U systems are identifiable by three LEDs above each button. This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough on programming both HomeLink and Car2U in two different cars to work seamlessly with your Genie garage door opener.

Programming Your First Car with HomeLink® for Genie Garage Door Openers

HomeLink is a widely adopted system for integrating garage door control into vehicles. Follow these steps to program HomeLink in your first car to operate your Genie garage door opener.

Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming (If Necessary)

If your HomeLink system has been previously programmed, it’s good practice to clear it to start fresh. To clear HomeLink, press and hold the outer two buttons (usually the first and third) simultaneously. Keep holding until the HomeLink indicator light blinks slowly and then rapidly for about 20 seconds. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons. This reset will erase any previously programmed garage door openers.

NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will remove all previous programming. Only perform this step if needed or when starting fresh.

Step 2: Teach HomeLink Using Your Genie Remote

Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door. Position your Genie hand-held remote approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button in your car. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While still holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the HomeLink button you selected. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light first blinks slowly and then changes to a rapid blink. Once the rapid blink begins, release both buttons.

Step 3: Synchronize HomeLink with Your Genie Opener Unit

The final step involves linking your programmed HomeLink button to your Genie garage door opener unit. The process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie opener model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Program” Button:

  1. Locate the “PROGRAM” button on the powerhead unit of your Genie garage door opener. Press and hold this button until a round blue LED illuminates, then release. A long purple LED will start to flash, indicating it’s in programming mode.
  2. Immediately return to your car and press the HomeLink button you programmed for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press and release process a second time. Watch for the long LED on the Genie opener; it should flash blue and then turn off, signaling successful synchronization.
  3. Test the connection by pressing the programmed HomeLink button again. Your Genie garage door should now activate. If it doesn’t respond immediately, press the HomeLink button a few more times.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Learn” Button:

  1. Find the “learn code” or “Learn” button on your Genie garage door opener’s motor unit. Press and quickly release this button. A red LED indicator will begin to blink, showing it’s ready to learn a new code.
  2. Within 30 seconds of pressing the learn button, press and release the HomeLink button in your car one time. The red LED on the opener unit should stop blinking and remain continuously lit.
  3. Press and release the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED should now turn off.
  4. To confirm successful programming, press the HomeLink button once more. Your Genie garage door should now open or close.

Programming Your Second Car with Car2U® for Genie Garage Door Openers

Step 1: Reset Car2U to Factory Defaults (If Needed)

Car2U systems come with default settings, with Button 1 often pre-set for Genie openers. If you need to reset Car2U to factory settings, or clear previous programming, follow these steps: Press and hold buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously for about 20 seconds. Continue holding until all three LEDs on the Car2U system start flashing. Once flashing, release both buttons. This reset will restore Car2U to its factory default configurations.

NOTE: Resetting Car2U will erase all previously programmed settings. Perform this step only if necessary.

Step 2: Program Car2U to Recognize Your Genie Opener

To link your Car2U system to your Genie garage door opener, use the following procedures based on your Genie opener model.

For Newer Genie Models with a “Program” Button:

  1. Locate the “PROGRAM” button on your Genie opener’s powerhead. Press and hold it until the round blue LED turns ON, then release. The long purple LED will begin to flash, indicating programming mode.
  2. In your car, press and hold the Car2U button you want to program for your Genie opener for two seconds and release. Repeat this press and release sequence a second time. Observe the long LED on the Genie opener; it should flash blue and then turn off, confirming synchronization.
  3. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again. Your Genie door should now operate. If it doesn’t respond immediately, try pressing the button a few more times.

For Older Genie Models with a “Learn” Button:

  1. Find the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED will start to blink, indicating it’s in learn mode.
  2. Within 30 seconds, press the Car2U button you’ve chosen one time. The red LED on the Genie opener should stop blinking and become solid red.
  3. Press the same Car2U button a second time. The red LED should turn off.
  4. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button once more. Your garage door should now activate.

Step 3: Reassigning a Car2U Button to a Genie Opener (If Necessary)

If you need to change a Car2U button’s default setting to operate your Genie opener, for example, if Button 2 or 3 is preferred for Genie, follow these steps:

  1. Press and hold Car2U buttons 1 and 3 for just ONE SECOND and release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
  2. Decide which button (2 or 3) you want to reassign to Genie. Press and hold that button. The corresponding LED will flash. While continuing to hold this button, press and release button 1 once, and then press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you held in step 2 and wait for its LED to stop flashing. This button is now configured for your Genie opener. Repeat this step if you want to program another Car2U button for a second Genie opener, although in this guide, we assume you are programming two different cars to a single opener.

NOTE: For additional support, refer to your vehicle’s manual, visit learcar2u.com, or the Genie Company website at www.GenieCompany.com.

By following these instructions, you can easily program both a HomeLink-equipped car and a Car2U-equipped car to operate your Genie garage door opener, enhancing convenience and security for your household.
