Max C: The Evolution of SUNY Potsdam’s Mascot

Max C. Bear is more than just a mascot; he’s the embodiment of SUNY Potsdam’s spirit. From cheering on Bears athletics to celebrating with alumni, Max C.’s enthusiasm is infectious. But the beloved bear we know today wasn’t always Potsdam’s representative. This article explores the evolution of Max C. Bear, from his predecessors to his modern makeover.

From Racquetteers to Polar Bears: The Early Years

Before Max C. Bear, SUNY Potsdam’s athletic teams were known as the Racquetteers, a nod to the nearby Raquette River. However, by 1958, a desire for change led to a contest seeking a new name and mascot. The winning entry, “The Polar Bears,” debuted at a basketball game against New Paltz College in 1962.

This initial polar bear mascot, however, was short-lived. Students felt the cuddly design misrepresented the college’s athletic prowess. In 1963, the senior class introduced a fiercer-looking bear costume, marking the end of the polar bear era and the beginning of “The Bear.”

The Birth of Max C. Bear: A Potsdam Legacy

“The Bear” eventually evolved into the iconic Max C. Bear, named in honor of Dr. John Maxcy, a long-serving chairman of Potsdam’s Health and Physical Education Department. Dr. Maxcy’s legacy is further cemented with Maxcy Hall, the college’s athletic complex. This naming convention solidified Max C. Bear’s connection to Potsdam’s history and athletic tradition.
