Nissan NERS Flash Failure Troubleshooting and Solution

A 2011 Nissan Altima experiencing a P0101 code required a PCM reflash using the Nissan Ners (Nissan Electronic Reprogramming System). This article outlines the troubleshooting process, the encountered issues, and the successful solution to the NERS flash failure.

Initial Steps and Flash Failure with Nissan NERS

The initial diagnosis pointed to a faulty PCM requiring reprogramming. After verifying the calibration ID against the relevant Technical Service Bulletin (TSB), the necessary file was purchased from the official Nissan website. Standard procedures were followed: a battery maintainer was connected, ensuring a stable 13.2-volt charge, and all accessories were turned off. The Cardaq-Plus interface was confirmed to have the latest drivers installed.

Upon initiating the flash process through NERS, the procedure failed at approximately 50% completion. Rebooting the system and verifying all connections did not resolve the issue. Subsequent attempts resulted in an error message indicating an incorrect part number.

Nissan Support and Further Troubleshooting

Multiple emails with Nissan support led to them providing a new CSV file for the programming process. However, utilizing this new file also resulted in failure. Further investigation focused on the CSV file controlling the NERS software’s part number recognition.

The CSV file, when opened in a text editor, revealed the specific part number the NERS software was attempting to match. As a troubleshooting step, the last few digits of the part number in the CSV file (ZX56A) were modified to a generic value (12345). This allowed the NERS program to bypass the specific part number check.

Successful Reprogramming with Nissan NERS

Before restarting the programming process, additional precautions were taken. The cooling fans, which were the only load present during the initial failed attempts, were disconnected. With the modified CSV file and the cooling fans disconnected, the reflash proceeded successfully.

The post-programming verification confirmed the successful update of the ECU part number. The vehicle subsequently ran without issue, and the original P0101 code did not reappear. This solution highlights a potential workaround for NERS flash failures related to part number discrepancies within the CSV file. However, it’s crucial to remember that modifying system files should be approached with caution and only after exhausting all other troubleshooting options.
