PSA Automotive Spearheads European Battery Production with ACC

The automotive landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with electric vehicles (EVs) taking center stage. Psa Automotive, now Stellantis, played a crucial role in this shift by co-founding Automotive Cells Company (ACC) with TotalEnergies and Saft. This ambitious venture aims to establish a leading European battery manufacturer, ensuring the continent’s competitiveness in the global EV market.

ACC: A Cornerstone of PSA Automotive’s Electrification Strategy

ACC’s formation marks a pivotal moment in the European battery industry. Announced in 2020, this joint venture combines the automotive expertise of PSA Automotive (now Stellantis) with the energy storage knowledge of TotalEnergies and Saft. This partnership leverages each company’s strengths to develop and produce high-performance batteries for the automotive sector.

The collaboration aims to address the growing demand for EV batteries, projected to reach 400 GWh in Europe by 2030. To achieve this, ACC plans to establish two “gigafactories” in Douvrin, France, and Kaiserslautern, Germany. These facilities will have a combined capacity of 48 GWh by 2030, enabling the production of one million electric vehicles annually. This represents a significant contribution to the European EV market, estimated to be around 10%.

Driving Technological Innovation and Sustainability

ACC is not just about scaling up production; it’s also about pushing the boundaries of battery technology. The joint venture is focused on developing cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries with improved energy performance, extended range, faster charging times, and a reduced carbon footprint.

This commitment to innovation aligns with PSA Automotive’s broader sustainability goals. The company recognizes the importance of reducing the environmental impact of vehicles throughout their lifecycle. By investing in advanced battery technology, PSA Automotive aims to provide cleaner and more affordable mobility solutions.

Ensuring European Independence in Battery Production

ACC’s establishment is also strategically important for Europe’s industrial independence. By developing a robust European battery supply chain, ACC reduces reliance on external suppliers and strengthens the continent’s position in the global EV market. This initiative has received strong support from French and German authorities, as well as European institutions, with financial backing exceeding €1.3 billion. The total investment in the project is estimated to be over €5 billion.

A Strategic Partnership for a Sustainable Future

The creation of ACC underscores PSA Automotive’s commitment to the electrification of the automotive industry. By partnering with TotalEnergies and Saft, PSA Automotive has laid the foundation for a sustainable future for European mobility. ACC’s success will be crucial in meeting the growing demand for EVs and contributing to a cleaner transportation sector. This venture signifies a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality and solidifying Europe’s leadership in the global transition to electric mobility.
