A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) delete involves removing the DPF from your Ram’s exhaust system. Several aftermarket kits simplify this process. These kits provide the necessary pipes to replace sections of the exhaust, from the turbo back. This guide outlines the process, including addressing the transmission crossmember.
Ram DPF Delete Kits and Components
DPF delete kits typically include pipes to replace the section containing the DPF. If you also want to delete the catalytic converter (often located in the downpipe, the first exhaust piece off the turbo), you’ll need a new downpipe as well. Replacing the downpipe often requires lowering or removing the transmission crossmember.
Transmission Crossmember Removal for Ram DPF Delete
Removing the transmission crossmember provides the necessary clearance for downpipe replacement. Follow these steps:
Supporting the Transmission
- Position a jack under the transmission, directly behind the crossmember. Raise the jack only enough to support the transmission’s weight after the crossmember is removed. Ensure the jack is securely locked in place to prevent accidental lowering.
Detaching the Crossmember

Remove the six nuts securing the transmission to the crossmember. These nuts are located in three slots on the crossmember, with two nuts per slot.

Remove the two bolts/nuts attaching the crossmember to the passenger side of the truck frame.

Remove the inner bolt securing the crossmember to the driver’s side of the frame.

Loosen the outer bolt on the driver’s side but do not remove it completely. This bolt will act as a hinge.

Carefully lower the crossmember, using the remaining driver’s side bolt as a pivot point. A rubber mallet may be necessary to help dislodge the crossmember.
Completing the DPF Delete
- With the crossmember lowered, you now have access to perform the DPF and/or catalytic converter delete. Install the new exhaust components according to the kit instructions.
Reinstalling the Crossmember
- Reinstall the crossmember by reversing the removal procedure. Ensure all bolts and nuts are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Importance of Proper Support
Failing to properly support the transmission can lead to serious damage, including engine damage, transmission leaks, and other issues. Double-check the jack’s stability before proceeding with the DPF delete. Always consult a qualified mechanic if you are unsure about any part of this process.
