The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody is a modern muscle car marvel, boasting a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that churns out a staggering 797 horsepower. But what truly sets this beast apart is the infamous “red key,” a seemingly innocuous piece of plastic that unlocks the car’s full potential. This article delves into our track test experience with the Redeye, comparing its performance with the standard black key (limited to 500 hp) and exploring the impact of the red key on its on-track capabilities.
Our test vehicle, a 2021 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, came equipped with optional features like Hellcat badging, a 220 mph speedometer, navigation, a Harmon Kardon audio system, a sunroof, 305/35-20 Pirelli PZero all-season tires, and a striking carbon fiber and suede interior. The total price tag, including destination and gas-guzzler tax, came to $90,060.
While the Redeye shares its platform with the base Charger, the luxurious interior and sheer power of the Hellcat engine quickly distinguish it. The comfortable bolstered leather seats and high-quality materials create a premium driving experience. However, the Redeye’s true calling lies not in luxury but in performance, particularly when the Red Srt Key is engaged.
Red Key vs. Black Key: A Tale of Two Chargers
The red key is the key to unleashing the Redeye’s full 797 horsepower. The black key, or selecting the 500 hp mode via the infotainment system while using the red key, limits the engine output, creating a noticeable difference in performance. Our goal was to quantify this difference on a racetrack, comparing lap times between the two power modes.
On the street, 797 horsepower is an exercise in controlled chaos. Even with traction control engaged, the Redeye eagerly spins its tires with the slightest provocation. However, it’s surprisingly docile in everyday driving, easily managing school runs and errands with three child seats installed in the back. The potent supercharger whine and the rumble of the Hemi V8 hint at the power lurking beneath the surface, ready to be unleashed with the red srt key.
Track Performance: Taming the Beast
On the track, the Redeye’s immense power becomes a challenge to manage. The all-season tires struggled to contain the 797 horsepower, particularly when exiting corners. Our testing was conducted in warm weather, with all traction and stability control systems deactivated to allow for a pure driving experience.
The 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, controlled via paddle shifters, proved to be a valuable asset, allowing for quick and precise gear changes without requiring the driver to remove their hands from the steering wheel.
While the Redeye is undeniably a powerful machine, its weight and tire setup make it more suited for boulevard cruising than aggressive track driving. However, even with the limitations of the all-season tires, the red srt key transformed the Charger into a formidable track weapon, significantly improving acceleration and lap times compared to the 500 hp mode. The difference in power delivery between the red and black key was substantial, highlighting the red key’s ability to unlock the car’s true performance potential. The red key truly transforms the driving experience, making the Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye a thrilling muscle car for enthusiasts seeking exhilarating performance.
