Welcome to an in-depth look at the University of Maryland Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, a distinguished program dedicated to cultivating exceptional critical care specialists. As the Program Director, I am delighted you are exploring the opportunities we offer. Established in 2008, our fellowship boasts a proven history of shaping outstanding critical care providers.
The University of Maryland Critical Care Fellowship is meticulously structured for trainees from diverse medical backgrounds, including emergency medicine, internal medicine, and combined emergency medicine/internal medicine. We provide unparalleled training experiences, commencing with an intensive, month-long summer education block spanning multiple institutions. This foundational period emphasizes essential procedural skills, mechanical ventilation mastery, and advanced ultrasonography techniques. Fellows benefit from the guidance of leading educators from across the region, establishing vital networks with critical care experts, and fostering collaborative learning with fellow trainees.
Following the summer block, the breadth of clinical opportunities expands significantly. A substantial portion of the fellowship is dedicated to rotations in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) across the University of Maryland Medical Center’s Downtown and Midtown campuses. This core MICU experience is enriched by rotations in specialized ICUs, including the Neuro ICU, Surgical ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, Lung Rescue Unit, Critical Care Resuscitation Unit, and the Trauma and Multi-trauma ICUs. To further enhance clinical expertise, elective rotations are available in areas such as right heart catheterization, the Burn ICU, and advanced ultrasound.
The University of Maryland Medical Center is a high-acuity center, providing fellows with exposure to a comprehensive spectrum of disease processes. Our institution features a leading ECMO program, and fellows actively participate in the management of both VV and VA ECMO cases. The comprehensive nature of our critical care training ensures that graduates are highly sought after by premier institutions nationwide.
Beyond clinical training, we are committed to a well-rounded critical care education that includes robust research opportunities. Our multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional curriculum features renowned critical care educators from across the country. Additionally, fellows engage in Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and a dedicated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion curriculum, fostering holistic professional development. Our faculty are actively involved in pioneering critical care research and encourage fellow participation in these endeavors.
The University of Maryland fosters a supportive environment, prioritizing the comprehensive well-being of our critical care fellows. We achieve this through regular social events, dedicated mentorship pairings, frequent MICU breakfasts, and monthly family dinners hosted at my home. We take pride in our program and the vibrant city of Baltimore, often enjoying local attractions such as Orioles baseball games or gatherings at local distilleries. Our graduates are exceptionally well-prepared, equipped to confidently manage any critical care scenario. Please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] with any inquiries. We are excited to share the University of Maryland Critical Care family and this exceptional program with you.
Sincerely,
Andrea R. Levine, MD (she/her)
