Why Autonomous Cars Need to Be Programmed to Kill: The Ethical Dilemma

The advent of self-driving vehicles brings forth a complex web of ethical considerations, particularly when faced with unavoidable accident scenarios. Imagine a situation where an autonomous car must choose between two evils: swerving into a barrier, sacrificing its occupant, or continuing on its path, potentially harming multiple pedestrians. This grim scenario highlights a critical question: should autonomous cars be programmed to make life-or-death decisions, and if so, how?

Recent research delves into public perception of these ethical quandaries. A study presented ethical dilemmas to hundreds of participants, posing scenarios where a self-driving car could save multiple pedestrians by sacrificing either its occupant or a single pedestrian. The study, using platforms like Amazon’s Mechanical Turk, varied factors such as the number of pedestrians, the decision-maker (computer or driver), and the participant’s perspective (occupant or bystander).

The findings revealed a generally favorable view towards programming autonomous vehicles to minimize casualties. Participants largely agreed with the utilitarian principle of saving the greater number of lives. This suggests a societal acceptance of autonomous cars making calculated decisions to reduce overall harm. However, a significant paradox emerged. While individuals endorsed the idea of “utilitarian autonomous vehicles” in principle, they expressed reluctance to personally own or ride in such a vehicle. This reveals a crucial conflict: people are comfortable with a self-sacrificing car ethic, as long as they are not the ones being sacrificed. The study concluded, “[Participants] were not as confident that autonomous vehicles would be programmed that way in reality—and for a good reason: they actually wished others to cruise in utilitarian autonomous vehicles, more than they wanted to buy utilitarian autonomous vehicles themselves.”

This inherent contradiction underscores the challenging “moral maze” ahead. Beyond the simple trolley problem scenarios, numerous complexities arise. Consider situations involving uncertainty – should a car prioritize the occupant’s survival over a motorcyclist, even if the probability of survival is statistically higher for the car’s passenger? Further ethical layers emerge when considering vulnerable passengers like children, who have “less agency” in their presence in the vehicle and potentially more “life-years” to lose. Liability also becomes blurred. If manufacturers offer varying ethical algorithms, and consumers choose a specific “moral setting,” who bears responsibility for the algorithm’s consequential decisions?

These are not merely philosophical thought experiments. As autonomous vehicles become increasingly prevalent, these ethical programming dilemmas demand urgent attention. The researchers emphasize the pressing need to grapple with “algorithmic morality” as we entrust millions of vehicles with autonomous decision-making capabilities. The question isn’t just about technology; it’s about defining our values and embedding them into the very fabric of artificial intelligence that will shape our future transportation.
