How to Program Your Car for Your Old Genie Garage Door Opener

Integrating your car’s built-in remote system with your Genie garage door opener offers unparalleled convenience. Technologies like HomeLink and Car2U, often found as three buttons located on your car’s visor or ceiling, eliminate the need for a separate handheld remote. These in-car systems draw power directly from your vehicle, ensuring they are always ready without battery replacements. Genie garage door openers are designed to be compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink systems typically feature a single LED indicator and may include a house icon on the center button. Car2U systems are identifiable by three LED lights, one above each button.

Step 1: Clearing Your HomeLink System

Start by clearing any previous programming from your HomeLink system. Press and hold the first and third buttons simultaneously for approximately 20 seconds. The HomeLink indicator light will initially blink slowly, then faster to indicate it’s clearing. Release both buttons once the rapid blinking begins.

Note: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed garage door openers.

Step 2: Training HomeLink with Your Genie Remote

Select the HomeLink button you wish to use for your Genie garage door. Position your Genie remote control close to the chosen HomeLink button, ideally within two inches. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote. While keeping the Genie remote button pressed, simultaneously press and hold the selected HomeLink button. Continue holding both buttons until the HomeLink indicator light transitions from a slow to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons.

Step 3: Programming HomeLink to Your Genie Opener

The programming process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model.

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Program Button)

  2. Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed for two seconds, then release. Repeat this press and release sequence on the same HomeLink button once more. The long LED will flash blue and then turn off.
  3. Press the programmed HomeLink button several times until your garage door begins to move.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers (with a Learn Button)

  1. Find the learn code button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. The red LED will begin to blink.
  2. Press and release the desired HomeLink button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and remain on.
  3. Press and release the same HomeLink button a second time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Press the programmed HomeLink button again to activate your garage door.
