Uber Car Program: Incentives for Electric Vehicle Drivers

Driving for Uber can be more rewarding, especially if you’re using an electric vehicle (EV). Uber is actively encouraging drivers to switch to EVs through various incentive programs, aiming for a greener future and reduced emissions. This guide breaks down the key Uber Car Programs available to EV drivers, helping you understand how you can benefit.

One of the prominent initiatives is the Zero Emissions incentive. This program is designed to reward drivers who use battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles for ridesharing. It’s important to note that hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are not eligible under this specific program. For a limited time, until April 1, 2025, eligible drivers in the U.S. can take advantage of this offer. The incentive is structured around 30-day periods. Drivers who complete at least 200 EV rides within a 30-day incentive period can earn a substantial $210 incentive. If you complete fewer than 200 EV rides in the period, unfortunately, you won’t receive the $210. Each eligible driver has unique 30-day incentive periods, and you can earn a maximum of $210 per period. It’s also crucial to ensure your vehicle information is correctly registered with Uber to confirm EV eligibility. Keep in mind that Uber Eats, Uber Connect, and delivery trips do not count towards this rideshare incentive, and canceled rides are also excluded. Payments are typically added to your account after meeting the criteria, but Uber does reserve the right to adjust or withhold payments in cases of errors or violations of terms.

Beyond ride-based incentives, Uber also provides purchase incentives in partnership with automotive retailers. For example, the AutoNation/Uber 2024 EV Promotion offers a $1,000 Driver Incentive. To qualify, drivers need to use the AutoNation platform specifically designed for Uber drivers to get an offer on an eligible battery electric vehicle. The purchase must be made at an AutoNation store between April 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. After purchasing, you need to register the vehicle details in your Uber Driver Profile and complete 100 trips within 45 days using the newly purchased EV. Similar to the Zero Emissions incentive, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are not eligible. This AutoNation promotion is a one-time offer, available for a limited time.

Another similar opportunity is the TrueCar/Uber 2024 EV Promotion, also offering a $1,000 Driver Incentive. This program requires drivers to use the TrueCar for Drivers on Uber platform to receive an offer from a TrueCar Certified Dealer on a battery electric vehicle. The purchase from a TrueCar Certified Dealer needs to happen within 90 days of receiving the offer and between April 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. Within 45 days of purchase, you must report the purchase to TrueCar and register the vehicle with Uber. Finally, completing 100 trips within 45 days of purchase with the EV is necessary to receive the incentive. This TrueCar promotion is also a one-time offer and, importantly, you are not eligible if you have received a driver incentive from any previous promotion. Again, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are excluded.

Both the AutoNation and TrueCar Driver Incentives are electronically transferred to your Uber account, typically within 30 days of meeting all requirements. It’s important to remember that these incentives are considered taxable income and are subject to 1099-NEC reporting. Uber administers these promotions and retains the right to modify or withdraw them.

In conclusion, Uber’s car program offers compelling incentives for drivers who choose to use electric vehicles. From per-ride bonuses with the Zero Emissions incentive to purchase support through AutoNation and TrueCar promotions, Uber is making it financially attractive to go electric. If you’re an Uber driver or considering becoming one, exploring these EV programs could significantly boost your earnings and contribute to a more sustainable transportation ecosystem. Be sure to check the latest terms and conditions on the Uber website for the most up-to-date information and eligibility requirements, as these programs are subject to change.
